I'm shaving this morning and over the electric buzz... was that a knock at
the door? I go open it and a long-awaited record box falls in. I flip it
over to see the PLANET E logo. Being late for a meeting, so I haven't even
dropped a needle on them, (oh, the agony) but here's the info. I'll chew
on them tonight and try and write some reviews for tomorrow.
PE RMX 5951
Designer Music, remix Vol. 1
A1. Good Girls
A2. Stevie Knows
B1. No Control
B2. Latin Chic Behind Door #1

* and also in the box:
GEMINI - A Moment of Insanity
A1. A Dream
A2. Crossing Mars
B1. Crossing Mars (remix)
B2. A Moment of Insanity
(all tracks written and produced by Spencer Kincy. Remixed by Free.)
* and also that 4th Wave record that everyone already owns or knows about.
A lot of people have asked me "is Planet E's subscription service WORTH
IT?" and I'm about to find out. For me, yeah, I think so. Unfortunately,
I don't have time to be driving to RecordTime and Submerge and back every
week like I used to, (I live about 90 minutes from Detroit) and mail order
is a barely bearable solution for me (Submerge, SeventhCity, other
internet-based distributors) is okay, but it's often a gamble if you can't
hear it before buying. I depend a lot on record reviews from people I
trust. Plus *waiting* for the shipping kills me every time.
I think Carl's idea of the "world subscription" is evolving for the better,
and I never know what to expect from it... which is good and bad I guess.
I recently got a letter than explained the service a little better than
before. For the record, after paying my membership fee, ($100.00, if I
recall correctly) I have received:
long sleeve planet e sweatshirt, (it's okay but not all that).
"elements and experiments" compilation 2x12" w/ frisbee
Connection Machine 12"
Landcrusing 2x12" LP <-- this was an import
(and just today):
Designer Music, remix Vol. 1 12"
Gemini- A Moment of Insanity 12"
The 4th Wave 12"
and I assume there's still more to come, more artists from the compilation
and such, so it appears to be paying for itself quite well. I can't wait
to hear new material from Fannon Flowers (Mode Selector). I talked to him
at the Landcrusing party and he said he's been busy writing tracks for it.
So for me, I would have probably bought all these records in the store as
they came out, anyway, so essentially paying in advance to get them is cool
with me.
(But than again, I'm kind of a fanatic about Detroit techno labels). Plus,
this way I'm guarnteed a copy, as things like this do sell out from time to
time. (Just ask one of the many that are still looking for an original 12"
of 69's 4-Jazz-Funk-Classics, Jam the Box/Lite Music or Sound on Sound)!
*Those* are the planet e "MUST HAVES" in my opinion. Plus, if this remix
EP is as good as everyone says it's going to be, well, that's just one more
reason to consider subscribing. THis is Vol. 1 and there are two that are
promised.... you do the math.
I hope this sheds some light on the "subscription" subject. Other people's
experiences are of course welcomed/encouraged. :)
peace
