Though it is undoubtedly old news to most of you, I recently got the
debut album by the Sabres of Paradise. Man, is this a great CD, it has got
to be up there with "76:14", "Ambient Works I" and the Underworld album (in
my book anyway). It all has a cool sleekness to it, doesn't it? Not to say
its unemotive or hollow. The atmosphere on "Clock Factory" is just dead on.
Though "Haunted Dancehall" is still pretty special, having listened to
"Sabresonic", I'm wondering if some of the 14-tracks could have been removed
to develop the stronger ones. Tracks like "Duke of Earlsfield" and "Jacob
Street" seem to just dither along, never going anywhere. More "Wilmot",
"Tow Truck", "Themes" and "Haunted Dancehall" would have been nice. The
9-track format of "Sabresonic" really works well, every track being a killer.
On a completely different subject, I've seen "Wasted", the
"Volume"-series best of, floating around. I got "Volume Eight", mainly for
the Curve track; it was alright. However, are any of the tracks on "Wasted"
anything special, especially the Sabres, Aphex Twin and Orbital tracks?
