I remember snatching both the original and the remixes when they first
hit watts, and running home with a big smile on my face.. However, I remember
being thoroughly unimpressed when I sat down to listen to them.. Though the
hard track (A2) was fun, all of the tracks were highly repetative.. I still
consider Bubblebath 2 and SAW I to be his most impressive releases.. I think
what is most impressive about him is that he's just some wacked out bloke
who's getting paid to have fun.. Although I think respect is definitely due,
this fanatical worship of his every breath reminds me of AHA! fanclubs.. Maybe
we should just proliferate his phone number to all who want it, so they can
finally confirm whether he wears his boots when he's in bed with his girlfriend.
I think we need to take a step back and breath some air.. There are MANY, MANY
other artists doing things that are of the caliber, if of a higher caliber, than
what sir Richard is doing.. People like Juan, Derrick, Carl, Terrace,
Kenny, Neuro Politique, and the like have been pushing the limits for years...
THIS IS NOT A NEW THING. I suggest that both sides of the isle go pick up
a copy of ART 2.2 and drop the needle on "Choke and Fly" by Balil or pick up
"Frequency vs. Juan Atkins" or "Jeff Mills vs. Subjects" OR "Relics" by Derrick
May or "Mind You Don't Trip" by Neuropolitique or anything on Metamorphic.. The
point is that there is so much out there that has just as much to offer as any
good aphex track.. My most listened to record currently is the "Virtual Sex"
compilation on Buzz.. expand you viewpoint, but don't succumb to pop mediocrity.
Techno is a combination of the blues and sonic experimentation.. It's about a
deep, personal soul that only manifests itself in a select few.. Don't get lost
in the ambient ether, cause it doesn't have to put you to sleep to make you
relax.
