i think we can all agree that that's just the natural flow of music. when a new "genre" is established, all of it is groundbreaking and mindblowing because its never been done before. eventually the limits of what it can offer are going to be reached until the technology available for use evolves in some way. i think, really, that idm is far from dead, but is just settled and mature, sitting on the porch in a rocking chair with a shotgun across its knees thinking about how great Music Has The Right To Children was. the real question, i think, isn't whether or not the genre is dead, but if there is still stuff coming out that those of us that like IDM enjoy... for me, the answer is, "yes, all of the time," so for my purposes the genre is alive, maybe not thriving, but alive, and i'm sure any day now there will be a resurgence of creativity and originality and with it a renewed interest in the genre, this is a cycle that all of the electronic music styles seem to go through, at least as far as i've been able to tell over the years. idm is a dumb name, but it's what we've got... i mean, if we're going to talk about this, maybe we should have a round-email discussion about what we would rather call the music :)... in which case we will have to rename this list. i dunno, who can know? isn't it enough for us to just love the music and take the good with the bad and not worry about the fecundity of the current output (which, like i said, isn't necessarily groundbreaking, but still quality.)? like what you like and weed out the chaff... joshua.
