yeah, you could easily plug a mic into the the line in on it. of course it's only an 1/8th inch plug, so you'd need an adapter or some such thing, but it's definitely mic friendly. you should go check out the iriver website: http://www.iriver.com/ they'll give you the lowdown on it all. i'm not sure about the riokarma's, but, i -think- there is an extra peripheral you can buy for ipods to record. but nothing built in.
