people who don't know about max/msp won't know that. i just
assumed it was part of the natural evolution of their music. when
did they start using it?

same clickety clackety cutty drum patterns and pretty much no
melody.
that just sounds like unimaginative people allowing the sounds to
shape them instead of the other way around.
every set of tools are going to have their own effect on the sound,
but there should still be a sense that the artist is doing what they
would do anyway no matter what the tools are. they just might feel
they've found the best way to get across what they want to do.
on the other hand, some people do specifically go after certain
pieces of software and hardware to get sounds they've heard on
records and like. there's nothing wrong with this up to a point - you
just want to get a nice warm compression sound, you may find out
what was used on something you think was well-compressed. it's
not going to drive the character of the music. but when people
hear a piece of gear is hot, the lemming factor goes into effect, and
lots of people want to jump off the same cliff regardless of what's
at the bottom.
