They use industry-standard lithium ion batteries. You can buy your own
and replace them. Secondly, they're the same batteries many other mp3
players use. $99 is just the price Apple charges. You're free to buy
third-party batteries. Apparently they can be had for as little as
$30. If the battery goes out in a Zen or other unit you're going to
have to pay the same amount. And the battery is covered for the first
year so if it stops working Apple will replace it for free.
