Just latching on to the last part of what Shimone said - I think the bit about buying the music in some form is crucial. I don't want to open the whole downloading can of worms, but at some point the practical consequences of nobody paying seem rather obvious. And I would add that *I* find it just as important to support people like David Hogson (Playing By Ear = playing.by.ear@mindspring.com) and PJ Dorsey (S://kimo = support@skimo.com ) as they ~are~ the smalltown "mom and pop" corner stores of the electronic music world. You can add your local shops and others doing what they do to the list (for instance, Chris Twomey is now doing New Power from Canada = newpower@interlog.com ) , Smallfish and Boomkat across the pond, etc). Personally I want to keep these lines of distribution open and the only way to do that is to support them by buying the stuff I want from **them**. The biggies make enough on other stuff and these people get (listen and understand) things they won't know about anyway. These days I would even call Forced Exposure somewhat of a "biggie", often undercutting the smaller shops they supply and making it hard for them to survive. I'm lucky enough to live near Detroit and can get a lot of great stuff in many good shops (e.g., Record Time), but I have to say that David, PJ and Chris all have things on their update lists that I won't see on the racks and I'd have to pay a fortune to have shipped - and the dollar vs. the euro sure isn't making imports easier, let alone customs hassles. Since 911 the "small guys" really have taken a sharp drop in sales. Not to get up on a soapbox, but they really do need the support of this community to survive. If you have troubles finding the new sounds you need, do yourself a favor and get on their update lists. You won't regret it. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
