I'm not calling anyone out in particular, other than the entire scene as a
whole, but exactly this kind of cynicism is to blame for the utterly boring
LIVE scene worldwide... DJs or live sets, it all sucks, and its not worth a
penny 9 times out of 10. The only difference is, to me, a DJ set isn't
worth a penny 10 times out of 10. I keep hoping for a decent live
performance and occasionally someone rises up and puts together a really
good show. I personally agonize about it every year when putting together
my events... what am I going to do to keep this interesting?
My work is very very dependent on the vocals, so I have a vocalist at every
show. Right there I've upped it, and it wasn't that hard. My audiences
kind of expect that now, and I'm glad. Occasionally I'll pull out an
instrument, because I'm one of the rare few that can play them, and people
go nuts -- which is silly, sad, and heartening at the same time. To me, it
means people are yearning to see something interesting again.
Ah, anyways, don't write off live shows, guys... just start demanding more
from them and I promise you that you will get it. Aphex Twin played UCLAs
All Tomorrows Parties a few years ago, hit play on his deck and danced
around in a sort of druid monks outfit... people were livid, and I doubt
he'll do that (at least in Los Angeles) again. At the same time, there's an
independent producer here named George Sarah who brings a string trio with
him, starts up his machine, and pulls out a bass guitar. He's fun to watch.
I like to think I'm interesting to watch. I feel horrid guilt if after a
show people are disappointed.
