drove the 400 mile round trip yesterday up to ptown to catch the devine otto von phoenecia beats. got there just as otto was taking stage. i saw him once over a year ago. he's definately the mr. bungle of idm. personally i thought the set last year at the blackbird was a bit more on. this is based on the fact that nobody showed up, maybe a hundred souls. most of his tracks were off his latest fungus slap my ass trilogy. i can only imagine how his performances will be taken in a packed venue. definately nothing wrong with ottos performance but rather the lack of portland representation. devine played next laying out a relentless compression of beats and a wish-wash of allemapper esque noise. what can you really say? i typically only travel that distance to see those artists that i hold in high regards. pretty much met my expectations and then blasted them. i beleive most of the tracks were based off of the asect:desct ep. he won't, he can't disapoint unless your looking for him to smash his laptop or do shitty break dancing. not gonna happen. phoenecia finished up the show much like they did a year ago. i loved brownout and they are still playing material of that sort (think BLD). if you havn't seen them think 'autechre live set.' They pretty much just layout frenetic beats over an up in the air time frame, continually evolving. just when your about to get up and leave so you can get that extra beauty sleep they change it up and you have to resume your last position. also all of them were friendly, my brother had a few too many long island's and i waited out in the rain for his ass while he chatted it up with otto and devine. Thats my take. klint http://www.laphop.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
