Copyright.
And current copyright law makes any intellectual piece automatically
copyrighted as soon as it is put into a tangible form. So all of my
emails are automatically copyrighted to me, although I don't care to
exercise my rights regarding them :D
It probably wouldn't be bad to get your copyright registered, though.
You basically just need to file at the closest copyright office, and then
you put that copyright on the webpage or the album sleeves or
whatever, and the date that they're released becomes the official
copyright. You should also be able to register dates along with
whatever you're producing.
So, for now, put your stuff as "copyright: your name." with the date.
When you get a registered copyright, feel free to use that. Contacting a
copyright lawyer or the closest copyright office should give you more
info, and let you plan what you want to do.
regarding putting stuff up on the web, you *can* use stuff like real
audio, but it's best if you just use a non-proprietary (in this context,
something that can be played in multiple programs across multiple
OS's) compression format, like MP3 or Ogg, and encode at either a
low bitrate for the entire song, or a high bitrate and just a portion of the
songs. Or if you'd like to provide tracks in finished form and not just as
a sample, feel free to use a better bitrate and the whole song.
if you don't want to come off as a total amateur, purchase your own
webspace and use that. You'll thank yourself by having much more
space and freedom, and your "customers" will thank you by not using
a crappy free site.
