I personally prefer "Venereology" over the rest that I've heard. it was the first Merzbow album i heard and it's totally brutal. it does the job and it does it right. i know someone on here has already criticized this release as being worthless but i can't disagree more. if you want some real noise then stick with this one... also Masonna's "Inner Mind Mystique" which also came out on Release/Relapse around the same time is similar. it is the solid, oversaturated noise that I consider "prime Merzbow" so stick with Venereology, Pulse Demon or maybe Tauromaschine... for more varied Merzbow I would recommend the Scumtron remixes as they include 2 originals (noise) alongside reconstructions by Autechre, Panasonic, Bernhard Guenter, etc... definitely not a noise record overall. A more recent album that I enjoyed a lot is "Amlux" on Important which has a lot more dynamics to it. I would also recommend the Karkowski collaborative release "mazk" which came out about 5+ years ago.... Amlux is honestly the only thing I've picked up in years but it's worth it... I would agree that a couple of Merzbow discs will most likely satisfy any yearning you have for harsh noise... although the Haswell disc that was released some time last year (solo, not the new Warp collab) is pretty damn scary and worth hearing at least once. Also, there was an album by Sshe Retina Stimulants (supposedly related to Sigullum S) that came out in maybe 95-96 (can you tell this is when I was into noise mostly?) and it's fantastic. it's called "ketsueki no eiga" and was released on Self-Abuse records.... I believe they have had material out on Ant-Zen in the meantime although I haven't followed it closely in any way.... m.mercer :: design + sound design :: http://www.matthewmercer.com/ sound :: http://www.mattmercer.com/
