This is one of those subgenres that suffers from having a name that alot of people use in different ways... Like when i talk to local kids who are into hardcore/breakcore, we use broken-beat to refer to breakbeat hardcore. Although just using "breakcore" is more common now... But when you talk to the kids into detroit techno, breaks, and 2step, they're usually referring to the broken beat you mention here.... I've heard only one brokenbeat (mentioned here) set by Edgar Ummm in pgh...and i was interested. But i haven't heard much more... - cutups ----- Original Message ----- From: "Philip Sherburne" <psherburne@mindspring.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Saturday, April 20, 2002 6:53 PM Subject: [idm] broken beat comps Ok, first of all, Jazzanova is not necessarily prototypical broken beat -- they're a little more to the "nu-jazz" angle -- but yeah, they fit the mold. Bomb Hip Hop is not "broken beat." Even though it's a loose term, it refers pretty specifically to a subgenre (quasi-genre?) sometimes known as nu-jazz, future jazz, future soul, etc., that incorporates deep house, breakbeats, Detroit techno, and soul. It's generally very syncopated, which is its most distinguishing mark. Labels to watch include 2000 Black, Bitasweet, Ubiquity, Sirkus, People, Sole, MainSqueeze, etc. There aren't a lot of broken beat mixes out there. I'm actually working on one, and when it's finally done and pressed up, I'll let the list know. (Currently got one broken beat mix up on Betalounge, and if anyone's curious, I'll send you the timecues for the stream.) Other excellent underground mixtape CDs have been done by Tomas Palermo (of XLR8R) and Mikebee -- the latter's might be available at SF's Amoeba records. Vikter Duplaix's recent DJ Kicks is a broken beat mix, but it's hardly "mixed" -- much more just sequenced in ProTools. Recloose has a comp on Eskimo that I *think* is mixed in the CD version, but I only have the vinyl, so I can't verify. Oh yeah, "Audio VIdeo Disco" on WMF, mixed by Dixon (Sonar Kollektiv) and Mitja Prinz, is a great mix featuring Attica Blues, Unforscene, Ski Oakenfull, Recloose, Metro Area (Morgan Geist), Freaks, and more. Leans toward house (as opposed to the freakier offbeat stuff from 2000 Black) but still very good.
