I haven't heard the Aphex piano bits in question, but I kind of imagine
them to sound like Conlon Nancarrow. Purely speculative, mind you. If
I'm feeling in the piano mood (which is an entirely hypothetical state of
mind), I (would) generally reach for the awesome Gieseking collection of
Debussy works, Charlemagne Palestine's acoustic piano works and Ligeti's
60s/70s music for keyboard (great stuff that re-incorporates minimalism
into another stream of post-serialism). Oh yeah, and the underrated Swiss
pianist Irene Schweizer (I'd also add Cecil Tayor, but I'm not generally
fond of his solo piano pieces).
Honorable mention goes to Lubomyr Melnyck for his single-minded approach
to the instrument (hours of continuous arpeggiated eye-glazing runs).
Re: pre-release record hyping- I guess if you have nothing interesting to
say about a record that most list members will hear anyway, you might as
well be the first.
