Whatever this new Bogdan Raczynski EP is actually titled, and however you pronounce it, I just don't really give a damn. He can make all the emo-core polish folk music he wants, but it's still just polish folk music. I respect an artist for trying to do something different, for putting effort into challenging himself. If this is what he likes, then so be it. If you love his first two albums on Rephlex, and don't normally buy eastern-euro inspired minimal accordian melodies, you probably won't like the new EP. Don't be afraid to not like his new music. Stand up and be proud to proclaim the new Bogdan sucky! Declare his best days have come and gone, it's OK! On a more technical level, while I've only taken one music class, three years ago in college, I feel I learned enough to say that the melodies in this EP are just stale. He chooses a couple of chords, brings you ploddingly from one to the next and then back again, all the while another "instrument" is fluttering around between the individual notes in the given chords. This might be a bad way to describe some of the most inspired jazz, but I don't think it misses the point on this EP, because the only point to this EP seems to be Bogdan sharing his nostalgia for a time that is now lost for him. Something to that effect. Good for him, boring for us. I really like the first track on the EP. Maybe because, with the stacatto accordian/organ sound, it's the closest to his earlier, wild, fast d'n'b escapades. I really hate the last track on the EP. Mostly because of the little "trick" of ending the song before it's over. I mean, it's just getting revved up, and then he goes and chops it off on a leading note, and while it serves its jarring purpose, it just feels amateurish. On the one hand, there's nothing wrong with a master craftsman who knows all the tricks and methods deciding to use the simpler ones for a given effect. On the other hand, Bogdan just does not strike me as a master crafstman at all. So yeah, I guess I'm just being negative again, but I just don't think this EP deserved NME's single of the week spot, not do I think I'll bother buying his next album if it's more of the same. Sad for me. -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo!
