Not anymore. Pop music uses aspects of music that have been popular in the past. Melodies, particular drum patterns, lyrical fragments, or any part of music history that strikes a nostalgic chord in the listener. This habit of listeners to try to compare what they're hearing *now* to what they've liked in the past has been (thankfully) abused in the last 20 years by musicians who have made music that would otherwise be just plain _odd_ if it weren't for these historically compelling aspects. The popular music you hear on the radio or MTv is better called Hit Music. On a tinier scale, Autechre certainly is popular in the scene that they find themselves in, and I think there are a number of vocal listeners who have found themselves confused by the difference between their being a popular act without the reuse of history that Pop music implies. -eric --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
