L'usine ICL- Slipthrough 12" It seems Jeff saves his mellower, more laid back stuff to be released under his ICL moniker. In terms of overall sound, this one fits nicely between a Pseudo Steady State and the first album or the Surface EP. Head noddy and groovy with flourishes of glitch, although not nearly to the extent of his Isophlux releases. Reverby flutes, beepy synths, solid beats. One uptempo song leaning toward drum n bass. I seem to recall that a couple tracks on this 12" were taken from the Psuedo Steady State cd. I don't mean to sound like a total honk, but this guy I think with a couple more quality releases could be a big rock star like Kid 606 or Richard Devine are now. Chris Clark- Clerance Park All the Aphex Twin comparisons are appropriate. I'd add that you might like this if you also like Jega's "Geometry," Gimmik's "Load Error EP," or even some of Kid 606's more playful moments. Sometimes crunchy and no nonsesnse and all business, other times hoppin' and skippin' along like every day was sunny and mild. Slag Boom Van Loon- So Soon 12" I wonder how much of the original Slag Boom sounds come in to play on here. On the original album put out a couple years ago, there were only two tracks with any drum parts to speak of and the majority of the album rather spooky ambient. Yet the 12" is all beaty and loopy. Certainly some nice stuff, though. The Boards of Canada mix could've shown up on In a Beautiful Place... and been labelled an original and I wouldn't have thought twice about it. The Mum mix and Tipper mix are also winners. Four Tet's use of real drums (or at least extremely realistic sounding drums much like a jazz combo drummer) don't really work for me. u-ziq's mix is passable. The muffled kick actually reminds me somewhat of the Orb. If there's any real disappointment it's that nobody attempted a remix/rework of the self titled album's epic, sprawling, and generally uneasy sounding centerpiece "Fallen Angels Entering Pandemonium." House of Distraction General DSP wankery. The only standouts on here are the two Jake Mandell tracks and Phoenecia's "Phase Inv. 2" which to me sounds better played at 45 rpm coming off the Ischemic Strokes 12". Looks like Schematic is carving out a nice niche (read: rut) for itself. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
