'Exciter' is a hit and miss to me, I'd say it's worse than all the 90-s
albums, but some tracks (dream on, shine, I am you, sweetest condition) are
really excellent and overall the album is ok. It's a bit like Black
Celebration - hits mixed with sentimental / melancholic tracks. This time it
sometimes gets too sentimental and sounds like late U2 :) Though if you
don't mind skipping some tracks, it's definitely worth having.
Mark Bell's sound production is also "ok, but could be better" to me. All
that "minimalistic drums with a pad on the background" stuff is good for a
couple of tracks, but not for the whole album. I'd prefer the sound
production done by Tim Simenon again or by Nellee Hooper (as it was first
announced). I miss fat strings, beautiful reverberation, lots of layered
synth sounds and all that 'maximalistic' sound of late 80-s - early 90s. Of
course there is no person to replace Alan Wilder, but...
