See "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" for anecdotes about DJs covering the
labels on their records. I think it mainly applies to Jamaican dub/reggae
selectors and Northern Soul DJs, for whom rarity/exclusivity were serious
competitive advantages. It's a very different context from today's broader
electronic-music spectrum, I think.
