I don't think this has been addressed/or maybe it has:
Is it me, or is Astralwerks killing the crap out of good artists? Last year,
Paradinas released the biggest let down album of the year, this year, the
prize goes to Photek. Is it just plain coincident that Astralwerks (skint)
are the pushers of these two flops?
After 'Lunatic Harness' i was all pins and needles to hear the follow-up
from Mu-ziq, but, god damnit, i would rather have no more Mu-albums than
hear that piece of commercial crap(the "d&b in idm" discussion comes in
here). I love GanggStarr as much as the next white boy, but come on, pick a
little less know clip to loop (yall need to cut that greedy ass......)(this
could be next discussion WORST sample ever).
Then, after watching and waiting for, -what has it been, 2 years?-photek
decides to release a new album. "RAD!" people say, another twisted, sick
beat album. Not really IDM, but we expect awesome stuff anyway because of
the intelligent nature of his style of D&B. So, was i the only one let down
when i went to the record shop to hear this new gem? the look of horror on
my face when i heard (vomit-wince) house style vocals cracked up the entire
store, who had gone through the same puke inducing realization that this
once viable and creative artist had pulled a 'Royal Astronomy', with dreams
of sound clips in Saturn commercials and soundtrack slots on NewLine horror
flicks no doubt the cause of this Oakenfold ready crapper of a album. I BET
MY LEFT BALL THAT ONE OF THESE TRACKS WILL BE ON A GLOBAL UNDERGROUND
RELEASE SOMEDAY!
my conclusion is this:
ASTRALWERKS IS THE ROOT OF ALL COMMERCIAL EVIL IN AMERICAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC!
Since the commercial success of Fatboyshit, with his ever present, annoying,
bullshit of bubblegum beats and production, the company demands nothing more
than "a hot seller". "no shit", you may be saying to yourself,"we knew about
this all along. why should i care now?"
this is why:
Warp, who i am obviously a massive fan of, recently signed a contract to
have their releases put out in America (yeaaaaaa!!) by caroline records
(booooooo,hisss!!). Caroline=Astralwerks.
This may be extreme, but i say we start a campaign to get warp out of this
devil deal. not saying that warp artists will lose control over direction
and personal style, but when Caroline cant move platinum numbers of, lets
say Jamie Lidell _Muddlin' Gear_, what will they say to warp??? "you know,
it doesn't sell because its not ACCESSIBLE enough" or "its TOO DARK for
commercial success". The music label business is a big mofo, breach of
contract sits well to U.S. courts. Caroline can claim that Warp is not
filling its side of the deal by not providing a product that can sell. Ugly,
it will turn.
So, BE WARNED (hahaha_)!!
If my language is harsh and abrasive, sorry, its a bitch of a time to live
in (haha_), get your head out of your stuffy ass.
be pissed about the manhandling of the arts in america, its the only way to
enact a change.
