I saw a post which stated that public enemy was the most idm-ish outfit. I
find that majorly off-base. During their hey day (88-92), they remained
outclassed by a west coast shitnose named Dr. Dre. The backing tracks on
100 Miles and Runnin and She Swallowed It to name a few were much more
intense and well thought out. Dr. Dre used very unique samplings of real
urban sounds which were tweaked and then added in the track, before and
after the vocals were offered. This vs. Terminator X's use of pre-recorded
samples already on vinyl and used by other djs in other east coast acts
(such as De La Soul.) Too bad Dr. Dre is total f*ckin sell out now...
but we always knew that was what he is about...
My actual vote for most-idmish hip hop is:
1.) J Saul Cane's early ventures as Depth Charge.
No lyrics, no problem. Trippy, droney, ethnic, and sweet beats.
