i absolutely fell in love with that comp, and it turned me on to a lot of
housier/jazzier stuff i'd never discovered before. my first recommendations
are
*Jazzanova -- really, anything they've done; their remixes (such as the
Pooley "what's you number" on rootdown) are especially good
*Swag -- the "Felony Funk" LP (on primitive, i belive) is incredible. one
of my tops for '99. deep, chunky house with bits of afro & disco thrown in.
*Tom Middleton, "A Jedi's Night Out" on Mixmag -- also features the same
Jazzanova/Pooley track, and lots of other killer house in a similar vibe.
CD is a mix, vinyl is unmixed.
If you did more of the Afro-house sound, you might check out a couple of
other records on Nuphonic: Soul Ascendants 2xLP (heavy Fela influence) and
Streetlife Originals "Sidewalk Stories" -- more of a disco edge.
Finally, you should check out Compost records (www.compost-records.de, or
maybe .com), which has a similar feel to some of the Rootdown stuff (I
believe Compost's Rainer Truby is featured on Rootdown) -- especially try
Future Sound of Jazz 6, for a sampler of other stuff to check out.
Hope this helps! There's a lot of brilliant stuff in this vein that never
gets discussed on this list; that really should change.
Cheers
phil
