waltzes can be in 6/8 too.

there's no such thing as a twelfth note. the bottom number in a time signature can only be an exponent (is that the right term?) of 2, i.e. 2,4,8,16,32,64, etc.. a song is in 3/4 if there are three quarter notes every measure, regardless if it's phrased like a traditional waltz.
