Don't have much knowledge of (or use for) time signatures, but I always thought it kinda cool that many music instructors have used "Friends" by the Beach Boys to teach the waltz -- dunno if it's true 3/4 though.

Aside from the pioneering angles of his work, Subotnick has always seemed a bit too academic to me. I can respect his work, but I can't really enjoy it... It's not strictly synthesizer music, but I'd recommend Tod Dockstader, a tape manipulator from the early '60s who produced the most proto-IDM-sounding music I've heard (minus the beats), some of which was used in "Fellini Satyricon".
