well, how about: they're both fusion jazz. how akin is that?
sure, tom j is the mad breakthroughman & clifford j the happy follower,
but they're essentially fishing in the same pond.
that said, i shall now shut up, for i am obviously too biased against
fusion jazz to try to make sense out of it or see a difference between
two subgenres of it. which is fine by me!
