Trent Reznor is not original, Trent Reznor is not 'underground' nor is he
using 'underground techniques'. There is no such fucking thing as
'underground techniques'. Technique is not meaning, moreover technique does
not create the audience. We all like music, some of the sadder amongst us
(including me) are suckers for certain sounds. I like EMU drum sounds, I've
gone right off 808's. But only the truly sad bastard would say I like music
made solely on such and such kit in such and such way. Anyway, Trent Reznor
is an oppurtunist with not that much to say lyrically or music. To call him
'Industrial' is an insult to other Industrial artists (Coil, PTV, Nurse
with wound, Pigface, Foetus) who are a million miles from him composition
wise, and artistically are a damn sight more talented. Trent comes from the
Ministry, Revolting Cocks school of (so called) Industrial music, which is
actually thrash metal with keyboards and drum machines. NIN is a lot of
loud ROCK music , it is NOT dance music, and for that reason has no place
on this list. Just 'cos the bastard uses a drum machine doesn't make him
IDM.
I was once a huge fan of NIN (pretty hate machine). But everything since
then has been pretty, well, childish sub spinal tap posturing bollocks. His
videos and music these days make me laugh like a dog. As a source of humour
he is great, as a source of musical inspiration he's a joke. When he say's
the word 'fuck' in a song it sounds like a 14 year old schoolkid trying
desperately hard to be naughty so as to impress his friends. It's music for
Beavis and Butthead and not, frankly, for real grown ups.
When ppl who obviously have zero writing talent make a fortune out of
swearing and making loud noises whilst talented artist go unnoticed does
actually piss a lot of us off. Why the fuck should any of us apologise for
that. Blame the major labels and the huge lumbering media machines that
make damn sure everyone on the planet gets exposed to their product.
