Open your eyes, people. The US has more than its fair share of "IDM"
labels. Try Plug Research, Planet E, Plus8, Matrix, Astralwerks
(admittedly a bit commercial these days, but still), Ntone/Ninjatune (with
a North American office), NovaMute, Metroplex...the list goes on.
Obviously everyone gets bummed about high import prices at times. I
decided a while ago to do something about that: I've stopped buying a lot
of imports, favoring the amount of domestic stuff I can get at a lower
price for the $11 12" singles and $24 double vinyl albums that imports
tend to be. I figure by supporting quality American labels instead of
supporting import-only snobbery, it's bound to help (plus I walk away from
a store with almost twice as many records in my bag).
You want to talk about deprived? Try the guy on 313 in Singapore, or
listmembers in Brazil and other countries where this music is equally hard
to find. There really is some truth to the idea that Americans are
spoiled...
