on Sun, 22 Dec 1996, William L Samuels <wls@U.Arizona.EDU> asked 'bout: The Amalgamation of Soundz - Theory ep (Filter 011) 1. eric 2. cat in the rain 3. hut 4. tortilla as mighty as everything on the reliable Filter label. AoS are the perfect marriage of everything which Filter have come to signify. Intelligent breaks, unconventional house, splashes of ambience and cool jazz... #1: ripping breaks that tickle the surface of a mesmerizing ambient/house fusion. worth more than any Looking Good/Good Looking 12" yet! #2: the expected jazz flourishes, with a fantastic airborne flute melody and some dub-damaged bass. not to mention a true-to-title cat mewling in the rain. and i thought it was a flip reference to Lucio Fulci's _Cat in the (B)rain_. guess not! #3: tears out of the starting gate like a Ballistic Bros/Foul Play/Photek hybrid aflame!; more funky-fresh flute (staying well clear of 'neo-hippie orthodoxy'), unintrusive (and tres cut-up) diva-vox, excellent fits n' starts programming which peaks at the end, cool-as-fuck b-line. no cats. #4: dense! very offbeat looped (live?) drums recalling Roni Size. blasts of testifyin' trumpet and tumbling tablas. a real head-over-heels groove. yep, Filter have done it again. anyone heard the Kid Loops/Cool Breeze project CD they just released?
