Well, in spite of the recent spate of "I hate compilations"/"I love compilations" messages on the idm list, I need to check in with a thumbs-up on _The Trip Hop Test_, on Moonshine here in the States. Yes, the packaging has a certain dairy quality to it (read: cheesy), but the mix of trippy tracks are really quite good, and for a domestic price, at least introduces those of us outside of San Fran to some quality music. Tops: The totally trippy Saint Etienne track, "Filthy", the Dust Brothers' "My Mercury Mouth", the Portishead remix of Paul Weller's "Wildwood", and the absolutely fantastic "Transmit Liberation" by Single Cell Orchestra. Yes, much of the material has been seen before (I'm getting very, very tired of "They Came in Peace" by Tranquility Bass, for example), but as an introduction to a new type of groove, this does the trick. I'd give it a 7, maybe an 8. Pay no more than $12, and search out the full-length releases by your favorite artist(s).
