There's this kid that DJ's around here who I run into from time
to time. He was in the pawn shop the other day when I was
picking up Francois' SK-1, and I had this conversation with him:
T: I want to make House tracks. Which drum machine should I buy?
Me: You have to decide if you want to use MIDI
T: What's MIDI
Me: It's a way to computer control and synchronize multiple
synthesizers.
[We get a HR16 out of the case and I show him how it works,
roughly]
T: Do I need to know what these mean to make tracks [points
at the buttons marked "Tempo" and "Signature"]
Me: Well "Tempo" means how fast and "Signature" means how many
beats are in a measure.
T: What's a measure?
Me: For you, Tyson, it's four beats, y'know BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM.
T: Can I come over to your house and you can teach me this stuff?
Doh! T's a nice kid but he's either been kept in a barrel for
most of his childhood or he's dumb as a sack of hammers.
