Anyone know anything about this band? I picked up a remix CDEP and it's very good, but I imagine that all of the songs are so different from the originals (as is the IDM way) that I have no basis for knowing whether I would like the band or not. Quickie review: Shiny Gnomes - "She (Remixes of MC Creatrix)" CDEP Rough Trade (Germany) RTD 195.1946.3 Distributed by Pinnacle in the UK 6 tracks, 49:43 1. Heart Moon (Astral Moon Mix by Astralasia) 8:46 2. Thinking At The Edge Of Unthinkable (Amoebas Mix by Locust) 7:03 3. In Nadreena's Garden (Mustang Dub Mix by Mouse On Mars) 7:14 4. Healing Sounds Asleep (Hounds Of Hash Mix by The High Corporation feat. Keith Appleton) 4:48 5. Heart Moon (Ambient Heart Mix by Astralasia) 8:41 6. Healing Sounds Asleep (Go To Sleep Mix by The High Corporation feat. Occo) 12:40 Yes, I picked this up because I like the remixers here, and I was not disappointed. Track 1 starts and ends in a space-ambient fashion and has a fairly pedestrian mid-tempo whooshy-type thing in the middle. Not bad. Track 2 is absolutely mad, all kinds of wicked out-of-sync percussion that eventually patterns itself out, and then there are the noises and echoes. Whoa! Track 3 is the gem, a complex clinky (as opposed to clanky) rhythm augmented by buzzes of bass and whoops of bleeps. Track 4 has a slow hip-hop-style beat (without the urgency) and actually has some vocals. It's pleasant enough, but doesn't really grab me by the neck and shake. Track 5 is like track 1 but without the middle part, and it actually works better this way. Track 6 is very nice, *very* quiet ambient (nature sounds, church bells, analogue hums) for the first 7.5 minutes, then overlays the beat from track 4 for the remainder of the song, and again, it works better than the first attempt. Not bad for $8. They had a zillion of these at the Tower in Boston, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it. - Adam J Weitzman Individual, Inc. weitzman@individual.com "Penguins are so sensitive to my needs." - Lyle Lovett
