I'm looking into getting gear/programs for live visual effects work. I know of the attachment to Max/MSP and the Korg Entrancer but can anyone recomend any realtime visual effects toys? On the hardware side, there aren't a whole lot of options. There's the Edirol CG-8, but at ~$4,500, I can't take it seriously. The Korg Kaptivator looks pretty sweet -- a video sampler with built-in LCD screens for $2,000, but still, way out of my personal price range. Software-wise, you've got a ton of options. Personally I use Livid Instruments Union 2.0. It runs on Mac and Windows (one license gets you both), and because it's a Max/MSP/Jitter-based application, you can develop your own extensions for it in Max/MSP/Jitter. I don't know of a single application on the market that allows that. To be honest though, this particular feature hasn't really taken off yet but I hope it will in the future. The rest of the application is great though, nicely laid out and for folks coming from an audio background, the control metaphor they employ will make a lot of sense. http://www.lividinstruments.com Check out vjcentral.com and vjforums.com for links to tons of other apps. Other notable applications include Resolume (http://www.resolume.com), Grid Pro (http://www.vidvox.net), FlowMotion (http://www.robotfunk.com), ArKaos VJ (http://www.arkaos.net), VJamm (http://www.vjamm.com) and VisualJockey (http://www.visualjockey.com) Of course, these are all essentially VJ applications, which may or may not be what you're looking for. Although it won't do real-time on my G4 Powerbook, Apple's Motion 2 has some config options for parameter control via MIDI messages. Maybe when I get the second-gen MacBook Pro...until then though, it's an excellent motion graphics application that isn't just an After Effects wanna-be. If you're looking for an opensource video effects & editing application, be sure and check out http://jahshaka.com. If you're running Linux, then check out Cinelerra (http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3) If you're into doing some hacking to get some cool visual stuff going, besides the obvious suggestion of Max/MSP/Jitter (also check out the AUVI objects for Jitter: http://auv-i.de), you may also want to check out the VVVV toolkit (http://www.meso.net), VoVoid's VSXu (http://vsxu.com), Salvation (http://www.harrisondigitalmedia.com) and Processing (http://processing.org) Speaking of visual stuff, does anyone know of any BitTorrent sites that focuses on that sort of thing? I know of a few that focus on the audio side of things, but haven't run across any that focus on visual stuff. cheers w --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The coming thing in this area is built into XBox 360 of all places -- Jeff Minter/Ivan Zorzin's "Neon" framework. It's going to be shipping soon (and very affordable, apparently) for PC - check it out on http://www.llamasoft.co.uk/ . (Some of my music soundtracked an early demo, so I'm biased, of course! It's ravishingly beautiful, though.) I just took a look at this - I would be pretty excited if it, or something inspired by it, found it's way to osx some day. I feel as though there's currently a hole in live video apps-- a high- level user friendly program that doesn't get down and dirty with the details (like Max/MSP/Jitter) but is still flexible enough to allow all kinds of knob tweaking and putting together different "visual generator" and "modulator" processors (rather than just playing, crossfading, and effecting video clips) I particularly think it would be interesting to get away from processing existing video clips (like all VJ apps) and move more towards synthesizing entirely new abstract visuals (like Neon) Nathan On Mar 14, 2006, at 12:26 PM, Andrew Walkingshaw wrote:

Take a closer look at Salvation, particularly the flash demos. Salvation reminds me a lot of Plogue Bidule -- modular and capable without being overtly complex. http://www.harrisdigitalmedia.com That being said, Max/MSP/Jitter is not as complex and unapproachable as most people make it out to be. It just requires a bit more reading and a bit more planning (disclaimer: I work for Cycling 74 so I'm a wee bit biased). cheers w --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
