While I agree that the author of this piece mixed up a slew of concepts and got a lot of facts wrong, I won¹t argue that highly compressed music is exhausting to listen to and crappy. It makes the music sound like a radio commercial for a monster truck show. yes neil young is on the cutting edge of audio, pushing for a high bitrate lossless format that... has existed for 20+ years before he ever brought the issue up. good job neil! now everyone continue to use flac, wavpack, APE and all the other formats -- oh what's that, your record label can't patent those because they are open standards? oh shit well, we'd better all get behind a new one then! you know another factor too is how many people listen to shitty ripped mp3s or youtube rips etc, stuff on the web taken off a cd/record -- things in one format that were mastered for another format. big diff between a 320kbs mp3 encoded with even just a better encoder or a random 96kbps youtube rip or something. There's an interesting bit in David Byrne's book "How Music Works" about how music is shaped by the context in which it's listened to. Like once western classical music moved out of the chamber / Baroque period and into larger concert halls, ornate trills and decoration gave way to more bombastic thundering pieces like Wagner. (And then reached their ultimate extension in the arena rock era) - And now the ubiquity of ppl listening through piece of shit earbuds in public places has led mastering/EQ and pop production techniques to adapt to that sonic environment.
