ENViRON : unpredictable aesthetics SUNDAY DECEMBER 5th : 7PM TIL LATE : $5 After presenting polar opposite talula performances at the last Environ @ Loop event, the endeavour to place together artists and musicians that would possibly never work together continues on Sunday December 5th. This time, environ features a group of artists who use abstract instruments, some home made and one of a kind, like Otis a metal constructed, part acoustic, part electric and part electronic upright sonic contraption built by Mik laVage for use in the live environment. Ex-Melbourne, now Northern New South Wales based Barry Hill, from the legendary electronic jazz trio Amphibian, meets Mik with his Double Bass for an 'upright instrument face off'. These two have actually worked together before, but seeming it was their act Thereminbass that inspired the talula game concept in the first place, what the heck... In the opening talula of the night, Michael Graeve uses common everyday domestic sound tools to deliver their message. Amassing a pile of 60s & 70s 'record players' with built in speakers and in various states of disrepair, Michael emanates a bed of sound, sometimes beautiful, sometimes rhythmic, sometimes fairly nasty. Working with Michael is Accordion player Svetlana Bunic from Monsieur Camembert and Darth Vagas, using a 'midi' modified piano accordion to control external electronic devices to generate something extraordinary. Just arrived from Cape Town, South Africa is DJ Jools, is a member of the Fong Kong Bantu Sound System, where he plays an eclectic range of sounds from afro-electronica, dub and avant-garde. Jools is the man in charge of warming up the Loop venue from 7pm until the first talula, and has held off playing the underground electronic stuff from his homeland until now. Zaibatsu does the later DJ set with his exotic mix of post-jazz, electro and Hip Hop related musics. Tony Woods from the moving image coalition (formerly the Super 8 group) who was involved in a talula performance at the last environ impressed with his slide work amongst other things and has been invited back to exhibit over 160 slides in the back room during the event. Video based creations this time come from laptop based Yasmin Sabuncu, formerly of Adelaide, and Khalid Abdullahi who focuses on animation. Brendan Palmer and Viktor Markov are the nominated sound 'mixers' this time, with artistic license to seriously modify any incoming audio signals. Through combining the creative energies of many types of innovative artist, environ events tend to have a certain electricity about them. The Audience is at the centre of the action with performers occupying the various corners of the Loop Venue, and this allows for those sitting within the space to actually have a strong contribution to the art being created... spontaneously...
