What has always distinguished his work for me -- aside from the idea of
cutting up FM radio stations, which he did first -- is his attention to
swing. If you're a producer (and who on this doesn't try to produce) it's
really hard to make tracks that are heavily swung that don't sound broken.
Part of it is that he's an actual player, and he can put his own human
swing on what he does.
The RA review is stupid -- the 'lame vocal' is OK; maybe not strictly
necessary, but it made me think that the reviewer is one of those people
who can't handle the human voice in dance music. There are a lot of them,
including people who diss Terrence Parker for playing vocal tracks. I
understand producers not using vocals, and people who gravitate towards
music like that, but the human voice can be emotionally affecting in ways
that bleeps never can. A really glorious vocal on a track can make it
exciting and emotional in a way no amount of acid squiggles can. And I
love me some acid squiggles.
