IMHO, all four EP releases on Dot are pretty essential. They're not all perfect (not much is), but they're pretty frickin' close. As for Skam, some may disagree, but I'd recommend all of the releases on the label except the Gescom records. I rate the Gescom EP on Clear as being the best they've ever done, followed by the Ae "Key Nell" remix thingie on Warp. The only Gescom stuff worse than the Skam singles is that horrendous "Motor" EP on Source. Cringe. Anyway, back to the original question - if you can find them, get the Bola, Jega and Boards of Canada EPs on Skam. The Freeform is OK as well, but not quite as mindblowing.

Schematic is the only one that comes to mind instantly. I just got their entire catalogue of four releases earlier this week, and I was mighty impressed. The "Skone" EP by Jeswa is especially sweet. The Autechre influence is worn a bit too obviously in places, but all in all, they could be a serious contender for my "label of the year" pick (or a tie with Dot at the very least) if they keep it up. I think the head of the label reads the list...? Also looking promising is Suction, a new label just started up here in Toronto. I don't know if their first record is even out yet, but I got an advance copy a couple of weeks back and it's very nice indeed. Split EP between Lowfish and Solvent, both doing their variation on the chunky, clanky tekno thang. Rumour has it their next release may involve David Kristian. I think PulseSoniq will be distributing their records, so any shop that deals with them should be able to get it. Greg

hm.... Gescom EP on Clear? I've got both Gescom EP's and they are on Skam.. Are they rereleases or is there another Gescom EP? anyway.. I think the first gescom ep (white sleeve with GESCOM stamped on the front and SKAM stamped on the back) is one of ae's most brilliant releases.. Of course, I've never heard Anti EP... i've heard all the rest except for the gescom records on Clear and Amber. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ , m7=

Rilly? I'd say that Gescom 1 and 2 are kind of boring, but the original Gescom 'Key Nell' 12" on Skam is some of the best shit I've ever heard. And why does everyone seem to dislike the 'Motor EP'? Certainly it's kind of housey, but the timbres on that disc give me the shivers [no pun intended]. Or maybe it's just that I'm impressed with how thick a slab that vinyl is... GD

Yeah. They did a release a few years back on clear called Fat Sumo. (Or was that one of the track titles?) Can't remember them all. Anyway, yeah I believe it was the second release on clear. Most likely gone at this point. Unless you get it second hand. I can't get it anymore. Check out the clear pages. I'm sure it's in their discography.

I would definately agree with you about Gescom's first release on skam. I play this at least twice a week in the store and get people who normally don't even buy IDM-ish type of music wanting it. yeah, but don't discount the effort put in by the 'conspirators', da-rel fitton, rob hall and Nicest Person On Earth, Dan 72.. wouldn't have been the same record without them, don't you know

i don't rate amber (it gets utterly bogged down in orbital-isms in parts) and the clear ep is...hmm.. passable. garbage, key nell (original), envane and chiastic slide are the records really worth buying cheerio! np - river people - weather report

i take it you don't like orbital. me neither.. huh.. well anyhow. I agree about garbage and key nell (original), but I wasn't too fond about envane, and I have yet to buy Chiastic Slide. I think that tri repetae, the gescom 1 ep and incunabula are their best records.

I think 'Anti' is one of best things they have done!!! When I listen to Ae or Gescom... I don't hear Orbital at all!!! The only semi-good releases they have put out are 'Envane' & 'Chiastic Slide'.(IMHO) Everyone gives those two releases 8 out of 10. Please don't be so hell-bend on Ae. ....because Orbital & Ae/Gescom are not comparable!
