Sounds are everything to me. A really expressive sound will usually "inspire" a riff.. from there, it's all improvisation with the recorder/sequencer on. When something happens that is worth keeping, I keep it. I repeat this process one track (instrument) at a time. After the initial "improvised" chord structure or rhythmic figure, the remaining bits are also improvised, but with a certain space/mood/place in mind. A sort of directed improvisation. I usually record the drum/percussion bits last. Loops don't work well for me because I like drums that actually accentuate what's happening with the ebb and flow of the music. If I do use loops, I use like a 3-measure loop under a 4-measure progression- this minimizes the repetitiveness (and sounds good, too. ;) --- About Virgin's "Ambient" comps: what a painless way to hear so much great music. I highly recommend them to everyone who enjoys interesting sounds. Brad-
