I believe Gil said he >was< going to air the tape, but I'm really
surprised that he was given the tape and not told what it was. The
3D Headphone Tour is a rather unique promo campaign, but it >is< a
promo campaign.
I host a weekly techno/industrial/alternative/whatever show on WORT
in Madison. I spoke personally with the Caroline Records radio rep
about this project. He asked if we would be interested in airing
such a tape, and how long we would want it to be (30/45/60 min.). I
agreed (why wouldn't I?) to air an hour-long performance, and I had
to tell them exactly when it would be aired. (July 25, 10pm)
According to the rep, Caroline's retail/marketing division would buy
a co-op ad in a local newspaper with one of the local CD stores,
advertising the FSOL CD and mentioning the date and time of this
special broadcast.
So obviously, this is a well-orchestrated and absolutely wonderful
campaign that benefits everyone from the label to the band to the DJs
to the fans. It seems though, Gil, that in your case, your program
director didn't do his/her job and tell you what this was all about.
(Unless they actually told you to air the tape at that exact time.)
If I were Caroline Records, I'd be pretty pissed that your station
was sent a tape but wasn't fully cooperating with the program.
Anyway, like Greg alluded to, my first thought (almost) upon learning
of these exclusive performance tapes was that the Internet was going
to be buzzing with people dubbing and trading these tapes. Watch for
it!
By the way, I hadn't heard how many of these tapes were actually
being made. Can anyone substantiate Greg's claim that about 30 were
being made?
