If any of you out there ever get tired of listening to the Monsters of
IDM, I have a few listening recommendations that might at first seem
unrelated, but are consonant with IDM.
Weather Report 'Sweetnighter' -- I've raved previously about this
disc. It is out of print in the US, but worth seeking out. It's in
our local public library, it might be in yours. This contains the
monstrously funky '125th Street Congress', and 'Boogie Woogie Waltz" which
is the worlds first electric jazz minimalist waltz.
Bailter Space 'Vortura' -- These guys are New Zealand's kings of guitar noise,
but the beats are relentless. And the drummer uses a sampler sometimes.
John Mclaughlin 'Devotion' -- This is Douglas 4, where Douglas 1 is the
first Timothy Leary spoken word record. More guitars, no vocals. Line-up
is JM Guitar, Larry Young Keyboards, Buddy Miles drums. Should be
subtitled 'drums and wires in interstellar space.' This is out of print
in the US, but I've seen a re-issue on CD from Europe.
Band of Susans 'Veil' -- Three rhythm guitars, bass and drums. Complete
wall or blanket of sound stuff, but some 4 on the floor beats. Susan Stenger
(bass) played with John Cage, and Robert Poss (guitar, songs) played in
Rhys Chatham's Guitar ensemble.
Pigeonhed -- which is a Steve Fisk project, I believe, out on SUBPOP
(yoiks!). Way cool stuff, kind of like Prince without the silly
toreador pants.
All these records have some danceable stuff that might be just the
thing to break up the 303 vibes ...
