There was some discussion about this album, and I've heard too many excellent things about it. But there are two versions of the Ginger album on CD, one on Warp and another on a different label. I think the non-Warp album had fewer tracks. I was wondering whether the Warp album was released domestically in the US as part of the AI series, through Wax Trax? All I can find now is the non-Warp version on import, and I'm not sure i should blow $20 on that. Thanks for any help, James.

I've seen only the original version (on +8) in the US. Overall I think it's spotty in places ... title track is _very_ good and de-orbit is as well (the latter not added to the US version) but most of the other stuff, some of which was recorded much earlier (like spikkels) IMHO suffers from repetitiveness and general lack of ideas. I'd give some of the others in the AI series, most notably Polygon Window and B12 a chance before this, or even the Wildplanet album (why wasn't this in the AI series? Too dancy?). Anyway, has the Autechre album been released yet? Any good? /-oOOo------------oOOo-\ --------------------------/------------------------\-------------------------- "the only constant / Harvey D. wow... just to weigh in with a different opinion (as usual)... i think Speedy J is brilliant, "Ginger" is a great album, and it blows away most of the other stuff in the AI series - *particularly* B12 which i think is so dull as to be practically unlistenable. Polygon Window has its moments, but Speedy J has *more* moments. And Spikkels is one of my favorite tracks. :) Jon Drukman jdrukman%dlsun87@oracle.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This calls for a very special blend of psychology and extreme violence.

Ditto on the Speedy J - brilliant. I actually had the same impression of B12 initially, but discovered a few good tracks upon listening a few months later. Of course, those were the ones that had been released as part of the Musicology series earlier, making the LP redundant, but... Ginger was one of the best albums I bought last year. Really beautiful production. I think it is the best one in the AI-series. Polygon Window has got some really interesting tracks, but also some tracks which are not so funny. B12, Autechre and Fuse are ok, but nothing to get too excited about. I am *very* glad they didn't put the Wildplanet-album in the AI-series. Actually, I don't quite get why that album has been released at all by *any* recordcompany... Fredrik / RND

Hmmmmm ... I hope that was IYHO. I quite like that album. I don't understand why you would even suspect Warp would put that in the AI series. It's basically a hardcore squidgy-sound album. Actually I was the one who suspected, sorry for the confusion. Grounds being that it isn't _that_ dancy an album, and does veer somewhat towards the experimental side. Re: Speedy J - differences of opinion... I listened to "Ginger" again last night (the +8 version, minus Deorbit) and have pretty much come to the same conclusion; I really like the title track, but not much else. I just don't thing there's enough "development" in most of the pieces to warrant much of interest, or if there is it seems to be so warm and consonant that it feels like you're drowning in a bowl of sugar. However, I can certainly see many people hold quite the contrary opinion. Perhaps we can all at least agree that Speedy J's approach is very similar to Kraftwerk in the use of direct, fresh structures and willful self-limitation, and it seems to work for most people. Anyway, what I fail to understand is how anyone could find B12 dull. For me, they find exactly the right place between depth and self-limitation. Ah well, I like "Redcell:Stasis" even better, particularly the "Stasis" half... /-oOOo------------oOOo-\ --------------------------/------------------------\-------------------------- "the only constant / Harvey D. I did not suspect that WARP would put Wildplanet in the AI-series, I promise. However, someone else on the list (I don't remember who, though) wondered why it wasn't put in the AI-series. I just wanted to say that I'm glad they didn't, cuz in my opinion that album isn't very funny. I don't think it brought many new ideas to the hardcorescene. I just don't like distorted *digital* kicks and snares, etc. However, equipment like the 808 & the 909 sound really fat when properly distorted... And, yes, these are my private opinions... Yes. It's probably one of my top ten albums of '93. Be sure and buy the pressing on +8, though, the Warp version doesn't have quite as good a tracklist. Absolutely stay away from the version on Radikal (which unfortunately seems to be the easiest to find in the US), which deletes a few tracks in favor of outdated Paap material like "Something for Your Mind." On Ambient Dub III there's also a track by A.P.L., 'Hypnosystem'. On Trance Europe Express II A.P.L. are present with 'Pleidean Communication'. Both tracks are pretty good, but i don't hear a 303. btw, Mixmaster Morris' track on TEX II is very good.... (the whole thing is very good actually...) I'm also really looking forward to a new Speedy J album. His tracks on AI2 and TEX II are some of the best things i heard in a while.... Mmmm, they're a bit more like the 'laid-back' songs on 'Ginger', like 'R2 D2' and 'Fill 14'. Jochem's new(ish) CD5 on Warp/Beam Me Up! is really good too. It features mixes of 'Beam Me Up!' and 'Pepper' as well as an impressive live set including 'Ginger', 'Pepper' and 'Flashback'. This CD5 is more housey trance. nope. as others have stated, some of their stuff gets redistributed by NovaMute, but even that doesn't guarantee it will be in every store. The difference between the +8 and Radikal versions of "Ginger" is that the Radikal one removes "Spikkels" and adds "Something For Your Mind" and "Pullover". (Why they didn't just ADD those two... I dunno. There would have been plenty of room evem with Spikkels left on.) I forget what the deal on the Warp one is. /jon

I just checked Greg 303's +8 discog, and he doesn't list the tracks for Ginger. I guess that maybe Alan has the vinyl copy, which may omit a few tracks (of which +8 is known to do on occation). For the record, it's on my +8 cd, with a matrix number of the following: DISQUE AMERIC 00W41<067>PLUS8025 Andrew -- (c) 1994, Andrew Bennett abennett@phoenix.aps.muohio.edu

'Spikkels' isn't on the Dutch Beam Me Up! release either. It's a Dutch word btw, it means something like 'dots'. You should check out the CD5 of 'Beam me Up!' too btw (released by BMU/Warp). It features a very good track called 'Live '94' which blends together the tracks 'Ginger', 'Pepper' and 'Flashback'. It's almost 16 minutes long and most tracks are very different from the album-versions. I think it's recorded live in his studio..... -- +-----------------------------------+ | Hans Veneman | | E-mail: veneman@tv99ad.hacktic.nl | | phone: +31(0)3200-35266 | +-----------------------------------+

The difference between the +8 and Radikal versions of "Ginger" is that the Radikal one removes "Spikkels" and adds "Something For Your Mind" and "Pullover". (Why they didn't just ADD those two... I dunno. There would have been plenty of room evem with Spikkels left on.) <<<<<<< is spikkels a good enough choon that i'd really really want to find the original? i've been holding off buying "ginger" on radikal for the track reasons alone! I have Speedy J's "Pepper (hot mix)" and love the rhythm...kinda housey, but very kickin...and the added echoey trancey sounds made me buy it...and play it regularly in my slow sets. Are there any other tracks like this by Speedy J which will move the crowd? Thanks, -djkc

i like it, it's a nice mellow closer, whereas Something For Your Mind and Pullover, while good, definitely sound out of place. /jon

Whoa... I remember this! And just after hearing his A Shocking Hobby, which rushes over me like a shower of shrapnel, here comes THIS re-release :-) "infectious simple melody" indeed. Funny to think that this is the same person.
