Thanks to Luke for recommending Hallucination Engine. I have been hearing it all weekend and I like it. Sometimes the Jazz/rock fusion sound is more than I would like, but it is balanced by the skillful dub, the great samples, the space bass, and WSB's sage words of advice. Not the best purchase I've made in the last few months -- but not the worst either! I will be watching for more Material, 'cause I think it is still evolving. Start your engines..... steve

I haven't picked up _Hallucination Engine_ yet, but am a long-standing Material (and Laswell) fan. You might consider going backwards with Material; the _Seven Souls_ record is a really excellent release, with some really awesome tunes and some of my favorite Burroughs overdubs. Also Laswell's Ambient Dub records already mentioned in IDM are really strong, with the phattest bass sound of any record I own! Material has been around since the late 70's, and has had many musical faces. Laswell has consistently taken the band from excellent electric jazz related fusions into overtly commercial material and back again, so you have to be somewhat careful with what records you select. Laswell is also heavily involved with the Axiom label, which is distributing a lot of music with a global perspective. Phil Z
