It's been pending for months. Apparently it's 90% old material that GPR have culled from their archives and Black Dog are not very happy about it. I've been trying to blag a copy off Ken Downie but they haven't even got any copies of it themselves (not even the master tapes). - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se

Well, for me _temple ..._ comes above above _bytes_ in my scale of favourites purely because i feel it's more mature, ands the tracks move me more. Sharp shooting on Saturn is really danceable and full of interesting melodies and beats, Mango makes me laugh - something that not many songs do - and the crete that crete made is a perfect ending, bringing me down to earth with raised spirits... That sound pretentious? Oh well, i guess it does, but never mind eh? I love 'em both. What about their trax on ART though - especially Nort Route - wow! :) james

For me Transparent Balls beats Bytes if only for the sophistication of certain tracks, ie Cost 1 + 2, Sharp Shooting on Saturn, The Crete that Crete made and more... but then again tracks like 3/4 Heart on Bytes are pretty amazing too. Other Black Dog stuff I love is Flux and Otaku from the BDP EP on Rising High, Gold Cheese on a GPR EP and Parasight. Oh, and for the person who asked about Ken Ishii`s Deep Sleep EP: Tracks are: A: Kala Floater B: Naiad The tracks are very ambient, but in the main very listenable, and very original. Kala is the most minimalist, and my favourite track is the exquisite "Floater"; shame it`s only 3 minutes long. If you haven't heard the Parasight ep, try it. Exquisite, especially Rosery Pilots. I find this ep so much richer and more intricate than Bytes. But I too want more! Much more... Balil's track 'Nort Route' is one of my alltime favourites. It's nothing like Parasight though :)

I really enjoyed the second album 'Temple Of Transparant Balls'. I think it's very innovative. Some crazy rhythms here.

This is funny really, as the 'Parasight' EP was put together in just one weekend by Ed of Black Dog (Ed=Balil) because he needed the money or something. The new album will be released on 25 july. I'm really looking forward to it! Maybe i hear some tracks of it next week as Black Dog will play live here in the Netherlands :) Cheers, -- +-----------------------------------+ | Hans Veneman | | E-mail: veneman@tv99ad.hacktic.nl | | phone: +31(0)3200-35266 | +-----------------------------------+

Try the eponomously named Black Dog Productions EP on Rising High, top jazzy funky stuff, with an acidy number too. I thought the second 'Transparent Balls' LP was disappointing, it was almost an caricature of their own style, the rythyms were just too disjointed and the melodies just too, well sugarey. However there are several good tracks on it and my copy was worth it just for the free poster! greg 3 0 3

Well, I got it! And I *really* like it. I have to give it a few listens before I make reviews (I do need to follow-up on that..whenever I say I'll do a review..but I'm a procrastinator!) Balil's "Parasight" is about the only one good "normal" dance track (as opposed to "intelligent?"...I dunno...) The others sound very sweet. Anyway, Now I'm waiting for TEX2 !! Any reviews, compare/contrasts for AI2 and TEX2? (15 points) And how good/bad is Chill Out Phase 2? (20 points) (You have 2 hours to complete the test) :) -kc

I guess you mean Temple of Transparent Balls. Upon first listen, you can tell right away that this is a black dog album, some of the songs are in a similar vein as bytes. Most of the songs have a happy feel to it, but my favorite song is track 3, which is somewhat dark, but I like the spooky dark stuff too. If you like bytes, get TOTB. As for availability, I got my copy from another IDM'er last month, but your best bet would to try Ear/Rational or maybe another IDM'er wants to sell his/her copy.

THE BLACK DOG RELEASE TRIBUTE TO WILLIAM BURROUGHS Pioneering electronica collective The Black Dog proudly present their 6th album Unsavoury Products, a tribute to the Beat author William Burroughs... The Black Dog were collaborating with Bill Burroughs prior to his death (the resulting album will surface in the future). For Unsavoury Products they have joined forces with the performance artist and poet Black Sifichi to present a seamless mix of 20 tracks, spanning over an hour, inspired by the work and life of William Seward Burroughs. Unsavoury Products was built upon the organic foundations of Burroughs work. His creative spirit is stamped all over the album; from the low-fi, emotional tapestry of beats provided by The Black Dog to the uncompromising vocal talents of Black Sifichi, reading original material in the style of Burroughs. The sleeve artwork features original paintings by Burroughs. Burroughs infamous "cut-up technique" is applied liberally throughout the album. The results have a strong literary theme, with Sifichi reading extracts of his own surreal text alongside The Black Dog's mystical and intimate sounds that capture the bizarre and disturbing world of Burroughs. The arabic beats reflect Bill's period in Tangiers, the track b4 the sky was built suggests his infamous drug-fuelled nightmares, followed by the dry humour of inconspicuous audiometric and the subtle beauty of the closing track pidgeon chest. Unsavoury Products provides the perfect soundtrack for your next journey to the Interzone. In a musical climate of disposable chart music and formulaic club remixes, The Black Dog continues to walk a solo path; unsavoury to some, inspiring to others... but always unique. Unsavoury Products will be found on Hydrogen Dukebox. Listening on Spotify. What I like about it is their patience and indifference to fashion. The track "Neither/Either" is actually a dubstep half-stepper track, 2 years after the UK electronic music world de-listed dubstep as a genre. "Control Needs Time" combines their two true loves: scary bass and treating sounds until they lose all notion of origin. And on top of that (or beneath that) they have a nicely melancholy chord progression. Favorite so far is "Shut Eye" which has some of the industrial filigree of Autechre while remaining more straightforward. The use of distortion and short delays on the drums is cool, changing up the timing and timbre. On Mon, Aug 31, 2015 at 3:30 PM David Seruyange <g3scom@gmail.com> wrote:

they have sort of being doing variations on the same thing for a few albums now, that said, its all amazing quality i think they try to do so much ambient, so much 'idm' style, a bit of dark techno, and sort of mix that about on each album so theres some of each whats great though is that they are really masters of all those styles... they can just keep doing the same thing for another ten years IMO Clint Anderson Systems Engineer On Mon, Aug 31, 2015 at 4:15 PM, kent williams <chaircrusher@gmail.com> wrote:

Music for Adverts is pretty different than Bytes and Spanners, less futuristic, but that and the diversity of sounds and styles there made a lasting impression on me in 1996. It seemed badass at the time that Ken immediately took off for unexplored sonic territory post-split. I never thought about it before but now that we're talking about em, I'm curious which of those guys came up with the title Temple of Transparent Balls, or if it was a full group creation.
