Out of curiousity, which Orb tracks have whale noises on them? I can't
think of one myself, although I've hardly heard everything they've done.
But off Adventures Beyond.., UFOrb, numerous singles/remixes, Live 93
(which IMHO is outstanding (and it works even better if you mix between the
two discs)) I can't recall any whale noises :-)
The orb's material was, and *still is* very innovative. Let's face, though
it might not be particullarly hard, there aren't many "ambient" groups out
there whose music sounds much like the orb.
One thing these folks certainly have over most of the ambient schlock (and
there seems to be alot more bad "ambient" music than bad IDM, doesn't it)
is a great sense of humour. Another thing, and this is an area, at least
for me, of comparision with say Jack Dangers and Richard James, is that
anything they do has a distinctive sound. It's pretty obvious when the Orb
has remixed a track, because it's just not like anyone elses :)
