If you don't go see the Artist Formerly Known As Donna Summer, AKA Jason Forrest, and Duran Duran Duran, well I'm taking away your membership card. Last night they came, they rocked, they pummeled the citizens, they dropped the bomb, and then they did it all over again. Duran Duran Duran proved once again that breakcore is the vanguard of creativity in electronic music right now. He started off hard and manic, where less fearless musicians might hold back something to build up to, but then he just kept piling on the breaks, getting more intense. Jason -- well, if you want to know how you can play a laptop set that actually engages and amuses and rocks, I've got two words for you: air guitar. Well, and two more words: iBook Cozy. His M.O. is to pick apart hoary 70s prog and rock classics, then reassemble them with all the parts that RAWK piled together. I heard Blood Sweat and Tears, the Beatles, J Geils Band, and many, many more go into his cuisinart and come out as a million thrashy pieces. And the new Cock Rock Disco CDs and records are sweet. And much respect for putting together a tour of all those towns the hipster acts ignore. Des Moines? Buffalo? Lansing? F*CK YEAH. 3/23 Des Moines, IA Vaudeville Mews 3/24 Chicago, IL Subterranean- With DDD and Stunt Rock 3/25 Grand Rapids, MI Urban Institue for Contemporary Arts 3/26 Lansing, MI Temple w/ Blowfly 3/27 Detroit, MI Magic Stick 3/28 Cleveland, OH Grog Shop 3/29 Buffalo, NY Soundlab 3/30 Toronto, ON Sneaky Dee's 3/31 Montreal, QB Friendship Cove 4/1 Boston, MA Bill's 4/2 Hoboken, NJ Maxwell's 4/3 Brooklyn, NY Northsix 4/4 Philadelphia, PA Khyber/R5 4/5 Washington, DC Warehouse Next Door - W- Food For Animals 4/6 Richmond, VA TBA 4/7 Charlottesville, VA Satellite Ballroom 4/8 Chapel Hill, NC Local 506 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I went to see Jason Forrest in Amsterdam recently. All he did was press play on his laptop and jump around. There was no "live" element to his show at all. I left after five minutes. man, i just can't agree with that, i am so sick of breakcore and the amen break these days. Its usually a fun night out, but i usually leave breakcore clubs swearing that i never want to hear another amen break in my life. (then usually end up somewhere similar a month later!) The thing that put me off the amen break was just over a year ago, Planet Mu xmas party. Place was packed and kids were jumping up and down all over the place while DJs were playing. One of the first acts of the evening came on, really good but no amen breaks in it, place just died off, people wandering off and stuff, but the minute they dropped an amen break back in, its like a mexican wave going round the room, just watching everyone spring to the dancefloor again as if they were hardwired to. I just dont like that sort of massive sheeplike movement. To me, thats just too easy to make a shitload of noise and then put an amen break under it, its like loweset common denominator or something. i totally appreciate a lot of acts working in breakcore, but theres only a handful of people doing interesting things with it i think. thor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i watched a video of him jumping around - i thought there was more than a touch of the morris dancer about him. is he a teacher in his day job? not that there's anything necessarily incompatible between being a teacher and playing a laptop set that actually engages and amuses and rocks - just that in this case i thought oh god how embarrassing. a big sense of intrusion in his private grief. he didn't seem to be doing much with his laptop either - does he just loop and mute? cheerio --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
