Lately I've found myself listening to a lot of metal recently after a friend hooked me up with some releases by Mortiis (who I heard performed with Coil in Switzerland a few years ago), Summoning and Abigor. One thing led to another and I found myself in the realm of Earth, Sunn 0))), Boris, Orthrelm and Isis. I was wondering if anyone else out there was into these sounds and had similar things to recommend. I realize that there's a lot of diversity in the groups I just mentioned, but they all seem be pushing the boundaries of metal into electronic, experimental and/or ambient directions. japanese hardcore band ENVY is probably the best thing i've heard in the last two years. it's like mogwai on metal with some tasteful electronic textures mixed in. they are unbelievably powerful and fluid. Hella and Lightning Bolt are two guitar/drums duos that push the speed/complexity issue (hella is better) Melt Banana has been blazingly fast and with tons with quirky guitar effects that make them rather digital at times. Charlie is a fantastic starting point. Mastadon does great crafty epic metal, their latest album some weird retelling of moby dick. obviously Fantomas rocks the speed, experimental, oldschool/electronic boundary quite well. hell, check out Wolf Eyes too. american noise terrorist outfit, great live shows, brutal-brutal-thumping. Dillinger Escape Plan's 'calculating infinity' album is amazing math-metal nearly beyond camparison with it's craftsmanship. just beware their more recent stuff with different singer... not so good. good thread idea.

check out Agoraphobic Nosebleed (who are, apparently, contributing to the next Fight Club 12" on Tigerbeat6), Pig Destroyer and Blood Duster (especially Yeest/Fisting The Dead)... sorry, i haven't ben following this whole thread, but in case they weren't mentioned i thought i should bring up ULVER. they started out as a sort of "romantic" black metal band, meaning they had as many acoustic passages and melodic singing as thrashing and screaming. then their second album was entirely acoustic/vocals/cellos, and their third was 100% raw black metal. after that they changed, doing a 2CD based on william blake's 'marriage fo heaven and hell' which strayed towards more accessible rock forms while simultaneously adding in electronic textures and beats a la trip hop etc. then the band fragmented, the remaining members immersing themselves in studio techniques. they recorded a masterpiece of an album called 'perdition city' which reminded me of peter gabriel and his electric piano gone electronica with a prog sensibility (think pink floyd). since then, there have been several glitchy EPs, an album of remixes by electronica artists, a few soundtracks of minimal electronic themes, and finally a new full-length this past june that seems to wed the best of all their worlds together. they're the metal band that wasn't afraid to change and embrace the future, and became so much more than what they were. interestingly, another black metal band called bethlehem tried to follow suit with a double CD of new songs and remixes marrying their old sound to dark trip hop, but i don't think it was anywhere near as successful (artistically or commercially). d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Its kind of a different stylistic fork than these folks, but I had some Guys who are pushing new cross-breeds of metal and electronics, Mostly with programmed drums and screaming vocals, play pgh this summer. Stephen O' Malley's Khanate - am listening as I type to the track "Fields" from Things Viral which may still be available to d/l over at the wire mag's MP3 archive (The Wire did a whole primer on the Earth/Sunn O "avant metal" sound in February). Surprising thing (or moreso not surprising) is that this track Fields displays the odd hint of Slint, or even Codeine... suffering from a very bad dose of food poisoning ... at a black mass... wearing tight denim jeans they borrowed from their little sisters. I personally prefer this type of thing "live", on a nice fat rig.
