I'm just pissed that Rob Hall won't be at the San Francisco show. If for some silly reason you're wishy-washy on going to see Autechre, he should be the deal-maker. Highly recommended! i always hear this about Autechre, but I saw them at DEMF a couple three years ago, and they absolutely blew me and the rest of the crowd away. There were probably 3000 people packed into this parking garage under the Hart Plaza. From what I heard from other people that were there, they played a crap set at Wexner that year, then came up to Detroit and blew the roof off. i have a bootleg of that set around here somewhere. i'll have to dig it up and see if i wasn't just imagining it. Diehard here.... rarely do they play full tracks from their recorded works anyway, more an evolved-out form of whatever is current with them. Last time i saw AE was in Austin, Texas circa May 2003, and while not overly blown away by the presentation, they still hold high rank among what i enjoy. Plus i got a woodie for Sean Booth, heh heh. np: Autechre - "Crystel" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The problem with the Oakland show wasn't Autechre's music. They aren't making pop anymore...get over it ;) The problem was the four hours of crappy opening acts that--by the time they took the stage--even the youngest and most energetic were exhausted. It was a terrible venue for them anyway. The mezzanine is great. I wish I could go but alas, I'm in Madrid, an (dare I use the term) IDM wasteland. This city is square. m*

amber wasn't pop. it's simply because it wasn't popular. (outside of its own field.) marilyn manson is much more pop than amber. a lot of people liked confield. I admired it. I also noticed that after studying several hours in a row for a science exam, i could dig confield much better. i don't know. maybe it's wishful thinking, or some other psych bulshit. nerd ersatz-noddy wrote:

I've read this whole stupid thread and I can't believe no one commented on the poor acoustics of the Oakland venue. Whoever thought to play live music in that space should be tied to a post and flogged in public. First of all, the place was basically a gymnasium. It was full of dead spots. There was nothing to break up the sound reflecting off of the back wall so resonant frequencies were a big problem. Perhaps worst of all, the floor was wood and actually vibrated whle the music was playing. You can imagine the kind of racket that created. The only place where I could hear what was actually being played was right up against the stage. Autechre weren't playing noise in 2001, but by the time it got to your ears, you wouldn't know the difference. --- ersatz-noddy <noddy@ersatzdesign.com> wrote:

Isn't it funny that we are talking at such length on a show that was in 2001? I find it quite weird [spooky] that so many other people were at this show [specifically] and all remember it. :P Problem at the show wasn't the space- per say [i've heard Ae play better sets in worse locations]. Main problem was the speakers were at crowd level. Which means that the bodies of people obstructured the sound so that you had to get to the front to hear anything, and then it was invariably mono.

Why did you go if you don't like the stuff they do? Now, this was worthless feedback. I happen to be another one of those who tried to enjoy Ae after being introduced to Tri. But, their subsequent works have really left me looking for something more melodic. IDM (er...electronica) has so many flavors.... most of which I'd never been introduced to had it not been for this list. Ive been here for over 5 years! This list and the opinions I've found here are wonderful. Having some attitude and personality in a post...well, keeps it fresh. Ever heard Wolf Eyes? --- Eric Sorenson <eric@explosive.net> wrote:

Now, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum, What might be right for you, may not be right for some. A man is born, he's a man of means. Then along come two, they got nothing but their jeans.   But they got, Diff'rent Strokes. It takes, Diff'rent Strokes. It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world.   Everybody's got a special kind of story Everybody finds a way to shine, It don't matter that you got not alot So what, They'll have theirs, and you'll have yours, and I'll have mine. A bit narrow-focused perhaps? At the exact same time that old-school electro was kickin in the first half of the 80s (and much respect to that as I am a big electro fan for sure), you also had industrial rock (Neubauten), industrial noise (Merzbow), power-noise (Whitehouse), and industrial-dance (Front 242). You had walls of guitar noise (Branca symphonies), shards of guitar noise (the No Wave scene>Sonic Youth), improvised guitar noise (Elliott Sharp, Keith Rowe), improvised saxophone noise (Borbetomagus), experimental electronic noise (Voice Crack), concretist collage and cutup noise (P16D4, Nurse With Wound), shall I go on? And that was the 80s. I have no patience for people who are still stuck in the prejudice of pro-melodic, anti-noise. This is not 1984 anymore, this is 2005, we have worshiped the glitch, the noise scene has merged with metal (Sunn) and punk (Melt Banana) and indie rock (Wolf Eyes) and techno (Pansonic), and even Public Enemy has brought the noise. If you are still stuck in the 'I can't listen to it unless it's melodic' category, you should be listening to the Echoes - oh wait, maybe even Robert Rich and Vidna Obmana still have too much noise for you?

Sigh, ok, you got me to type... In vein with this thread, I would disagree. IDM has several branches. I am not sure how you want to cut your box, but "glitch" is just one aspect of IDM. Assuming it's still IDM to include: BOC, early Ae, yellotone, bonobo, via tania, bola etc.etc.etc. ; these are all very beautiful and they implore little, if not no, "sonic noise" [or if they do, its in melodic context]. With Ae going in this direction, they went into the realm of the mind. Of the intellectual - the ethereal, conceptual. A stark-dry world of numbers and pattern-rythms. Kinda like a bad trip while watching some scary 1984/the borg/matrix/george bush movie strapped to an electric chair with tweasers in your eyes. Their textures are (still) wonderful, they are (still) talented at making music with shapes. Slap me, but I believe most people are not "intelectuals" when they listen to music, they are emotive. People don't usually dance 'intelectually', its an emotional thing. When you dance for hours [=long enough to not be self aware], you don't "think" about it, you just do it, and if the music moves you, it moves your heart/soul/body - not your mind [disagree with me if you like]. Therefore I believe that music "for most" is something which must move you. Technique - the intellectual mechanism, is the carrier. In a bad light: Its the same drive that makes you want to upgrade to have the latest-fatest computer/car/phone. It's a fad, the new sound, the new package, the new technique. However, the essence of music is always the same, it is timeless, I feel that "music is timeless", just as much as it is "modern". Of course, any negaive light has equal positive light. And through "evolution" = technology, comes new means, new sounds, new possabilities = new inspiration, new depth and complexity = new music. With noise we get music = "the focus OF the carrier itself", music of the medium. Music that sounds like its stuck in the computer or my head is inside the dsp chip... It's like a book on the techniques of shredding books. Just as valid as another book... that's pretty cool stuff that people are making things like that, even if its not you or my cup of tea. And you could say, that to understand anything, you would need to understand the yin and yang in order to appreciate the whole. [but thats just my Libra side talking] The other thread that is in here, mixed into it, is an automatic association that approachable [emotional] music = pop = sell out. Most definetly one should not make music to please some concept of another group, if their motives are not true. Usually one applies the term "pop" with the connotation that one is making music that "we think other people will like" - at the expense of one's self. This is a connotation I would assume everyone was familiar with...? I would be careful to not connect pop with emotional music. If something moves a lot of people, thats "good" music, and if it becomes popular because of it, great! but that is not really "pop" music. Something which is "designed" by a company to "suit" the tastes of their "market" for a calculated "profit" margin. yuck. Make the music that you want to make. s. p.s. I was there, Ae in Oakland, and for the record.. it was definetly horrible... [hehe] lol. But I was expecting it to be, so I wasn't all that shocked, 5 people were dancing - it was interesting to watch them cause it looked like they were on an extreme dosage of LS D. Ae always have played recent or new material live. If you wanted to hear early stuff live, you would have had to hear them back in 1995... IMHO: very inspiring live sets back then.

I agree with this. But the thing is, something like "Gantz Graf" has much more emotional resonance with me than virtually any electronic dance music, which to me is practically a contradiction in terms. My best dance experiences have been propelled by large groups of sweaty humans (e.g. Trouble Funk or Ivo Papasov's Bulgarian Wedding Band), and the surest way to get me off the floor is to play some techno, which I find about as funky as John Denver. Likewise, with a few exceptions such as Max Tundra, I find most "melodic" electronic music unsatisfying. Too often it's just turning various elements of a two-bar sequence on and off, with no real development. For strong melodies I tend to turn to folk, classical or pop music. Obviously, many people have the opposite experience in both of these cases, and that's great. I just want to dispel the idea that people who like the glitchy stuff (or, for that matter, Stockhausen and Subotnick) are just sitting there scratching their chins and spotting the DSP techniques. I listen to it because it moves me more, not less, than EBM, techno, or whatever. In fact, it often makes me grin like an idiot. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Erm, the opposite of noise is not _more_ noise, its _no_ noise! hehe ;) Maybe we all start making classical music. Oh wait, thats been done already. I see your hops of evolution, but there are also lots of other hops going around. Nice that you point out that new music is sometimes just old forms forgotten. I can agree with that in a lot of ways. I also get the feeling, and maybe you do as well, that when I hear "new" music and it really moves me [the stuff you want to close your eyes to and life seeps through your body] I don't get the feeling that this is something alien = foreign; but rather that this always existed and is simply being "remembered" - so in that sense, good new music is perhaps something new to help me remember something too old to remember...
