after encouragement from alan, teep and chris i am posting a top 5 list and introduction. so, hello! my name is jill. i've recently moved to berkeley, ca from massachusetts. i got into techno/raves about a year ago. up to then, i had not thought much of electronic music. i played trombone and thought all music shouldn't be 'synthesized'. i was into classical music, musicals etc. i grew up on cape cod where there was NO scene for techno whatsoever so i didnt get exposed to it until college. now, however, i enjoy electronic music immensely. there is so much music out there that i can always find something to fit my mood, from ambient to hardcore to breaks to idm. i don't have much of a collection yet, but i am working on it. i've been kinda low on cash lately, so my budding collection has been put on the back shelf. fortunately berkeley has some great stores that sell used cd's and my boyfriend has a pretty large collection that i may borrow from anytime. (although his collection is devoid of some of the harder stuff that i like :) i don't really have a favorite album, so to speak. these are the albums that have been frequenting my cd player as of late. "Amarok" Mike Oldfield "Selected Ambient Works II" Aphex Twin "The Brown Album" Orbital "FSOL" ISDN "Bytes" Black Dog

Hey everyone, what's up.. I'm new to the list so I thought I'd introduce myself.. My name is Scott, I'm half of a 2-person electronica production team called The Narrator.. We make all kinds of electronica, recently it's been sort of an electro-orbital vibe but we're into house, techno, pretty much everything. And I LOVE disco ;) We do a live show as well, we're currently hustling for bookings. I'm on the east coast of Canada (halifax, nova scotia) so here's a shout out to all the canuck-heads. Oh, and if someone wanted to be a dear, they could listen to our tunes on mp3.com and suggest labels to me with a similar sound as ours so we can approach with a demo :) I've been scoping appropriate labels for the past week or so. Check out HPS and Aquatic. http://mp3.com/narrator/ gear list: Yamaha A4000 Sampler w/AEIB1 exp. board Roland JP-8000 Future-Retro 777 Alesis MMT-8 Korg ER-1 Yamaha TX81Z Peavey Spectrum Analog Filter Mackie 1642VLZ mixer Behringer Composer Pro compressor 2xTech1200s and mixer -- Scott Burke - webfx@webfx.ca The Narrator [www.thenarrator.com] Live House, Techno and Trance music --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sorry I just kinda popped out of lurker mode without any sort of introduction there. My name's Shawn, and I'm a technoholic. I live in San Francisco, and I play infrequently to dirty ravers in warehouses and half-empty bars. Like many of you, I was first exposed to IDM in the form of Aphex Twin. I was a Nine Inch Nails fanboy in my teens (I know, I'm dating myself here), and I stumbled upon an RDJ "remix" on the Further Down the Spiral EP in '95. Along with 99% of the people I know, I gradually discovered Autechre, BOC, Plaid, Cylob, Two Lone Swordsmen, Squarepusher, LFO, Luke Vibert, Photek, et al. After I moved to SF in '99, I kind of tuned out IDM and focused on drum and bass, house, and eventually techno (which, like "IDM", is a term I don't particularly like using). Recently, my new-found love of deep, minimal stuff sparked a renewed interest IDM. I'm getting back into Monolake and Arovane. I'm loving the dubby stuff, like Basic Channel (more specifically, Rhythm & Sound), Deadbeat, Thomas Fehlmann, and Michael Mayer's "Immer" mix. I'm a sucker for click-house, a la Matthew Herbert, Akufen and Soft Pink Truth. I like the new Mouse on Mars as much as the old, and I'm not afraid to admit that I really liked the Milosh album on Plug Research (though I do wish the songs were all a little more developed). Right now I'm digging the "Station" compilation on Ai, and the new albums by Swod and AM/PM. What I haven't really been able to get into is the harder stuff. Kid 606, Venetian Snares... it's all just a bit too aggro for me. Hard techno's never really been my thing either, though I will admit to owning a couple of Joel Mull, Heiko Laux and Renato Cohen records. :) So yeah, that's me. Let me know if you have any recommendations based on what I've listed above, I'm always on the lookout for something new to listen to. welcome. you have a very similar path through electronic music as i (in fact, i moved back to SF in 99 too...). i originally was pretty interested in "experimental"/drill'n'bass stuff like aphex, squarepusher, ae, etc, but then got pretty obsessed with mainstream DNB. in the last few years i've fallen back into the more subtle stuff like mathew dear, mathrew herbet, akufen, apparat, helios, etc. its not that i've started disliking other more maximalist idm, but i've just gotten more appriciative of subtlety in music. i must be getting old. recommend away ;) shawn allen wrote:

Yeah, I'll confess to snatching up everything that Matthew Dear's done so far. Backstroke was kind of a let-down for me, but the Audion stuff has renewed my faith. "Kisses" and "The Pong" are hardly subtle though. :) -- shawn allen mailto://shawn@alterior.net phone://+1.415.577.3961 http://alterior.net aim://shawnpallen --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

True, but I *heart* Leave Luck to Heaven. It took me a loooong time to get sick of Dog Days, I must admit. Over Now was another booty-shakin bit of click-house. Recently, I've been working the !@#$ out of that Digital Disco compilation from Force Tracks. Discopatterntester rocks my socks. Luis On Feb 16, 2005, at 1:49 PM, shawn allen wrote:

You might like the new kinda Berlin sound, like Apparat and T.Raumschmiere. It's kinda 4 4 ish, driving but not abrasive. Also if you like dubby housey clickey stuff try Vladislav Delay, AKA Loumo. Also you might like Murcof. The Martes stuff I like but there is one other that I'm not wild about. A.I. is wicked, one of the better new labels around. Claro Intellecto and the "New Town" comp you might like. I would guess it's more like experimental or old school techno sounds, or something. Also check out L'usine "serial Hodgepodge". --- shawn allen <shawn@alterior.net> wrote:

Check. I love just about everything on Bpitch Control. :)

"Demo(n) Tracks" was a little too ambient for me. I guess I like things a little more grounded, or structured somehow.

Yep, I've got most of the Claro Intelecto stuff. I'm pissed that they didn't include "Language" on the CD version of Neurofibro though... I bought the LP the second it came out and that track grew on me the most, but I've totally worn it out. And Jeff McIllwain is the shit. "Push" is one of my favorite records of all time. I've had a hard time tracking down some of the older Lusine Icl stuff though. Agreed on the merits of the Push EP. Wish a bit more of 'Serial Hodgepodge' had been in this vein (but then its Hodgepodge status would have been compromised). 'Sustain' was another excellent EP. Haven't heard the 'Flat' EP; anyone got any compare/contrast evaluative comments? Also I really liked his first s/t album (as L'usine) released on Isophlux in 1999, but the production was flat, boxy and one-dimensional. Weird, in view of the attention paid to production and spatiality on later Lusine (icl) stuff. alan ---------------------- Alan Lockett, (Senior Language Co-ordinator, EFL), Language Centre, University of Bristol, 30-32 Tyndall's Park Road, Bristol BS8 1PY, UK Alan.R.Lockett@bristol.ac.uk tel: +44 (0)117 3310914 fax +44 (0)117 3310870 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I haven't heard the "Push" ep, I have the "Flat" remixes ep and I like a couple of the tracks, the others seem a little "FFFlat"...but it's a remix album so that could be someone elses fault.

Ah, that album is the shit! I actually like it alot more than the material after that, the more "IDM" sounding stuff. And I don't feel like the production was off, maybe a little more emphasis on the low end, thats a good thing in my book. Definitley more factory sounding stuff though. But to each there own...

Well, I've managed to d/l a track off 'Flat' and it's a deeply unpleasant remix by Matthew Dear, whose work I'm unfamiliar with but who seems to have been getting Big-upped around these parts quite a bit. If this is representative, er.... why? Dunno who else remixed the flat Flats, but if it's remix EP of Lusine stuff, then it ain't Lusine for me.

Indeed. It was partly the low-end vagueness that bothered me. I guess the lo-fi home-made factory-produced element might appeal (and - trainspotting linguistic note - 'Lusine' actually means 'factory' in French. Oooh.), but if one was looking for something of the high- and low-end resolution and clarity of, say, Bola, BoC, or Arovane (which personally I was), then 'L'usine' (Ispohlux.1999) would disappoint. Otherwise it's a fine album, I agree. alan ---------------------- Alan Lockett, (Senior Language Co-ordinator, EFL), Language Centre, University of Bristol, 30-32 Tyndall's Park Road, Bristol BS8 1PY, UK Alan.R.Lockett@bristol.ac.uk tel: +44 (0)117 3310914 fax +44 (0)117 3310870 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hey Shawn -- south bay resident here, lined up pretty close to your list of likes.. Here's some additional stuff that might interest you, if you haven't already heard it... Cuantico's album "Sustainer" is really good Chain Reaction style electronic dub. Also some of the entries on the Deepchord label are good though overall it's not quite as involved as I like it. I am really digging this Holger Flinsch album 'der zehnte juli' (the 10th of july) which I guess isn't the newest thing he's done but it's all I could find. http://www.choke-music.de/choke.php has some samples and he has a great mp3 album on Thinner http://www.thinnerism.com Three compilations worth mentioning too: Superlongevity 3 on perlon for that clicky shit; Toytronic "Everything is Green" and Sutemos Intelligent Toys 2 at http://sutemos.net/ for top notch melodic idm... -- - Eric Sorenson - Explosive Networking - http://eric.explosive.net - --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

What I haven't really been able to get into is the harder stuff. Kid 606, Venetian Snares... it's all just a bit too aggro for me. Hard techno's never really been my thing either, though I will admit to owning a couple of Joel Mull, Heiko Laux and Renato Cohen records. :) - Give it time .... Vsnares will eventually get ya. I didn't care for it at first. Also, early Kid 606 is very click-dubby... check out GQ on the EQ, P.S. at first. Also, early Kid 606 is very click-dubby... check out GQ on the EQ, P.S. I love you (and the remixes EPs of similiar names) and Soccer Girl ep to get you started. I agree wholeheartedly - the Soccer Girl EP and PS I Love You are two great releases, even if the Kid's more recent offerings haven't been too impressive. -- Kurt If honour and wisdom and happiness are not for me, let them be for others. Quick question: is this Apparat the same Apparat that Johann Johannssonn, the composer of virdulego forsetar and englaborn, plays in? I've looked at his website discog and I think they're different. Just wasn't sure. Doubt it. The Apparat from Berlin is a guy called Sascha Ring who doesn't 'play in' anything he just *is* it. Also I believe JJ breathes a far more rarefied air compositionally, with 'natural' strings etc. Berlin Apparat is more into pure electronic sounds including computer crashes and a good deal of assault and battery (albeit of a quite sophisticated kind) or digital manipulations of organic instruments. alan ---------------------- Alan Lockett, (Senior Language Co-ordinator, EFL), Language Centre, University of Bristol, 30-32 Tyndall's Park Road, Bristol BS8 1PY, UK Alan.R.Lockett@bristol.ac.uk tel: +44 (0)117 3310914 fax +44 (0)117 3310870 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sounds like you're referring to the Apparat Organ Quartet, which is a group from Iceland. The original post was about Apparat, who is one guy from Germany.
