Hey you Chicago people--come check out the release party for Coaster this Monday @ Sonotheque... M50 provides the sonic appetizers and Popkan serves dessert of the funky minimal flavor. Hope you can make it! -liz --------------- SUBVARIANT RECORDINGS presents the album release party for Quantazelle's Coaster. Featuring Quantazelle (subVariant Recordings, Modsquare, Fractalspin) performing a live laptop set. With special guests Popkan (subVariant Recordings) performing a live-sequencing set and DJ M50 (WNUR, Meiotic, Illmeasures) performing a live DJ set. Giveaways and promotions throughout the night. Sonotheque, 1444 Chicago Ave, Chicago, Illinois Doors: 9pm 21+ $0 Door. --------------- QUANTAZELLE COASTER ALBUM RELEASE PARTY AT SONOTHEQUE OCT 4, 2004 Chicago, IL—How many CDs have you bought that end up as beverage coasters after the first listen? But how many are coasters before you listen to them? Quantazelle’s new CD, Coaster is just that: a designer beverage coaster and an experimental electronic album. Hear it Monday, October 4 at the release party at Sonotheque featuring Quantazelle with special guests Popkan (subVariant) and DJ M50 (WNUR, Meiotic, Illmeasures). “It’s a very exciting moment,” says Liz McLean Knight, subVariant label-head and the solo composer behind Quantazelle “The release [of Coaster] marks the start of many exciting things for the label in the near future, and Sonotheque has a fantastic sound system to showcase our direction. Popkan and M50 put on a really great show; it will definitely be a fun night.” Quantazelle’s signature sound consists of glitched-out textures and blissful atmospherics held together by funky machine-noise grooves, and catchy, melodic explorations. Imagine Melody on Mars–era Aphex Twin gifted with more processing power, or maybe a glitchier, instrumental Múm. Coaster features 12 tracks of Quantazelle’s bright, melodic IDM. From the catchy glitch-hop of the opener, “Braking (Hushed)” to the wistful piano arpeggios of “Sunken Projectile,” the album, while being most appropriate for chill sets and dance floor transitions, has enough diversity within to keep the experience memorable and engaging. The most striking aspect of the release is its packaging concept. The CD itself has a dotted outline showing the correct placement of one’s beverage, and the CD booklet features an instruction manual detailing proper utilization of the Coaster. “Accessories" are also offered simultaneously with the album: a Coaster Case, which allows easy portability of Coaster, and four Custom Surfaces, enabling a stylish personalization of the CD / coaster. Having performed alongside people like Jimmy Edgar, Miles Tilmann, Proem, Proswell, Machinedrum, and Kero, Quantazelle has performed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago for the digital arts festival Version>02, and has made numerous appearances in Chicago and its surrounding states. Aside from running subVariant Recordings, she also is the editor-in-chief of acclaimed Chicago-based IDM website, Modsquare.com, runs the e-commerce site Fractalspin.com, and has her own fashion design company featuring jewelry made from electronic components: Zelle. She has also recently being named “one of Chicago’s fabulous 20-somethings” by the Chicago Tribune’s Red Eye for her commitment to experimental electronic music and her entrepreneurial spirit. Popkan, AKA Thomas Erdmann, has been quietly amassing an exuberant fan-base where ever he performs live. Through his careful and intelligent drum structuring, combining bleeps, squeaks and more, he creates a hybrid of glitch, dub, acid-funk and minimal madness. Equipped with an arsenal of gear and an energetic stage presence, Popkan makes for a truly electrifying live performance. DJ M50 is Mac Jenkins, a regular host at WNUR for over five years who has played alongside talents like Nobukazu Takemura, Stewart Walker, Apparat, String Theory, Mr. Projectile, Adam Johnson, and Common Factor. Blending his eclectic tastes for genre-blurring electronica and dance floor-oriented selections, he has performed live radio sessions at WLUW, WCKS, KCSB, and is a member of the collectives Meiotic Promotions and Illmeasures. ----------------------------------------------------------- About SUBVARIANT RECORDINGS SUBVARIANT RECORDINGS is a Chicago-based record label committed to releasing boundary-pushing electronic music, and well as creative approaches to the promotion and presentation of each artist’s work.
