hello
sorry, im on the digest so my response to this is a bit slow.
the 'is x selling out because of y' is a really pointless debate. its stupid
and pointless every time ot comes up on this list, which is about once every
six months.
i imagine that the people who accuse artists like LFO and Casino vs Japan of
sellingout are not themselves musicians who are trying to make some kind of
living from their art. i imagine they also think that electronic artists get
paid for EPS or compilation appearances, that they dont often pay for their
own flights when playing out, that labels lavish them with equipment and
support.
who know why mark bell decided to soundtrack the commercial? perhaps his
laptop was broken and he needed it repaired. perhaps he wanted to buy a new
car. perhaps he doesnt care about environmental destruction and is more of a
help the homeless kind of guy. or perhaps, most obviously, he doesnt have a
clue and the label is liasing with the ad agency.
name me more than five companies that arent affiliated with some sort of
morally dubious scheme and i'll shake your hand. if its not advertising, its
the compnay that owns your label, or presses the cd, or whatever. hey, even
vinyl pressing plants arent immune; our first EP was delayed by a year
because it was alleged that the original plant had neo-nazi links.
so; its all a question of balance. i wouldnt *knowingly* let my music be
used by, say, the re-elect George Bush campaign; i dont like BMW much but id
probably take their cheque and, i dunno, donate a proportion to Reclaim The
Streets. better me getting their money than Moby. get some fucking
proportion, and just enjoy the music.
