(*@&#(*&#&!!!! Amon Tobin played a DJ/Laptop set here last night in Auckland, New Zealand. The first time he's been here in about 6 years, and the first time I've managed to see him play. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but wasn't getting my hopes up too much. I think I've read some average reviews on here before. As it turns out I was very pleasantly surprised. A lot faster and harder than I was expecting. Moreso than on his albums with the exception of a couple of tracks. He played quite a bit from the last 3 albums, and lots of stuff I didn't recognise... Lots of mental breakbeats and Drum and Bass. Absolutely rocked the place :D Also... monolake is playing this Monday night... what can I expect? Should I be prepared to chill, or to shake my ass? No.. it was basically a DJ set He had a couple of decks and a laptop... I wasn't in gear spotting mode, but a friend informs me he's using final scratch. To what extent I'm not sure. I'm one of those freaks that tends to enjoy a DJ set more than a live set though, so I was a happy camper. 'Live' performances of electronic dance music usually feel a bit 'press play on tape' to me, and are less flexible in terms of playing to the crowds mood. Final scratch is an exciting piece of software to me because it blurs that line between a live set and dj set a little bit further. Anyhow... it was an awesome show, and there was a good turnout (300 people perhaps? A nice sized crowd anyway) so hopefully we'll see some more acts coming down this way. *crossedfingers* prefuse73 *crossedfingers* cheerio! Richard kingmob@nmt.edu wrote:

I don't mean to be contentious here (or start a riot)... but if live electronics are too 'press play on tape'... what then are DJ sets? I would think they would be more so by definition. I enjoy a proper DJ set too, but a properly executed live act is a wonder to behold.. a rare wonder, yes, but a wonder nonetheless. I think it has to do with the impressions held when you go see the show. If you see that they're DJing, you don't expect a performance of live music -- you expect good mixes and song selection. If you see a live show, I think you expect more from the person you're seeing. I know I do, despite it being a rather silly semantic. derek -- eggytoast.com : eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

good point. i dont expect anything already, i just don't go to electronic shows anymore. its always the same (boring) picture of a guy staring at his laptop. dont want to compare these things, but last week went to see Human League , and they played everything LIVE! even drums and bass lines. just some ideas for idm/electronica acts... s. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm not calling anyone out in particular, other than the entire scene as a whole, but exactly this kind of cynicism is to blame for the utterly boring LIVE scene worldwide... DJs or live sets, it all sucks, and its not worth a penny 9 times out of 10. The only difference is, to me, a DJ set isn't worth a penny 10 times out of 10. I keep hoping for a decent live performance and occasionally someone rises up and puts together a really good show. I personally agonize about it every year when putting together my events... what am I going to do to keep this interesting? My work is very very dependent on the vocals, so I have a vocalist at every show. Right there I've upped it, and it wasn't that hard. My audiences kind of expect that now, and I'm glad. Occasionally I'll pull out an instrument, because I'm one of the rare few that can play them, and people go nuts -- which is silly, sad, and heartening at the same time. To me, it means people are yearning to see something interesting again. Ah, anyways, don't write off live shows, guys... just start demanding more from them and I promise you that you will get it. Aphex Twin played UCLAs All Tomorrows Parties a few years ago, hit play on his deck and danced around in a sort of druid monks outfit... people were livid, and I doubt he'll do that (at least in Los Angeles) again. At the same time, there's an independent producer here named George Sarah who brings a string trio with him, starts up his machine, and pulls out a bass guitar. He's fun to watch. I like to think I'm interesting to watch. I feel horrid guilt if after a show people are disappointed.

I also like a good show with a good dynamic on stage, but you gotta remember that most of these electronic musicians are just a single guy or two, not making a lot of money, and not exactly making music that's easy to translate over into "real" instruments. While I'd like to see a string trio or horn section at the average IDM show, I also know that in most cases the tour consists of the artist driving around the country in a stinky old van, getting little sleep, and making little money. Unless the other instrumentalists are an inherent part of the group, it's going to be hard to convince them to tag along for the ride :D I mean, it's sort of like complaining that your average indie film doesn't have the best actors, the biggest explosions, and the most up-to-date CG animation. I also usually only pay $5-$10 to see these guys in small bars, not $50 in a giant stadium with huge video screens, but I think being up close, even when the guy isn't the most active, is worth something. -- eggytoast.com : eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
